I didn’t enjoy Circe as much as I enjoyed The Song of Achilles. I do think Miller explores themes relevant to women like aggression from men, expectations from others, and fighting against who you’re perceived to be all of which are extremely important.

I didn't think I'd like anything more than Song of Achilles, but this takes the cake! Madeline Miller's prose really shines, and her feminist interpretation of the story of Circe is both fascinating and surprisingly relatable. Simply a wonderful read from beginning to end!

Before reading this book I didn't know much about Circe beyond what I'd learnt from The Simpsons. We watch as the young Circe, fed up with abuse and shoddy treatment, grows into a powerful (but not all-powerful) witch. I was perhaps a little disappointed that she didn't go full Evil Willow though. She had her moments, of course, but they weren't dealt with in detail. Although the story dragged a bit in places, Madeline Miller really knows how to end a book. It's so emotionally charged that you'll be hugging your Kindle.

I wasn't a fan of the writing style. I can understand that a lot of people reading this already know what is going to happen, but I found the future tense to be distracting from what was going on.

I think if I had tried to read this book as a physical or e-book, I would have put it down after a few chapters. Circe's early life was harsh, demeaning, and lonely feeling constantly othered by her family for her powerlessness. Perdita Weeks made this story engaging, heartfelt, and empowering as Circe grew in her power. I was overall pretty unfamiliar with her mythos and was able to enjoy how her story fit in with so many other classic Greek myths that I did grow up hearing about.

Such a delight from beginning to end. I was expecting a daunting read and found it was beautiful in its simplicity. Very well done.
