2.5 stars? This one ping ponged from 2 stars to 3 stars and back

16 June 2023 - The book was dragging, so I skipped 100 pages to the final two chapters -- which were the heart of the book.

15 June 2023 - While I really enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird, something is off for me with the second book. I cannot determine if the story less engaging, or if I am less engaged reading a physical book vs. the audiobook.

7 June 2023 - I so enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird, that I was thrilled to find book #2 of the Emmy Lake Chronicles at my local library.

3.5 stars. A light read full of gumption and female power, set during WWII. The women at home want to serve the war effort and do war work but are thwarted by obstacles in a man's world. From the perspective of Emmy, a budding journalist for a women's magazine, that includes her personal life story as well. Sweet, interesting, kind of basic, but a nice read.

This didn't have quite the same magic as Dear Mrs Bird but it did leave me with the same happy feelings of friendship. The beginning could've been done with a better rewrite/ edit. Took far too long to explain the current situation/ characters and I almost didn't stick with it. Really lovely book when I got past the first 1/4-1/3. It's rare to come across books with women at the forefront and the men being minor characters. I look forward to part III.

Thank you to Goodreads for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Emmy Lake is a fledgling journalist working for Woman’s Friend magazine in 1941 London. She, along with her friends and family, are coping with the hardships and fears the war brings.
This is a charming book focusing on everyday people and their wartime experiences. I really liked Emmy and found myself caring about her life and adventures.
This is the second of a series and I hope there will be a third - the book just sort of ends in early 1942 and several plot lines are left very open ended. I would definitely read a third if one is released.

I enjoyed the second book in this series more than the first book. Emmy is more likable (she did some things in the first book that I thought were not in good form), and the situation is more believable in many ways. Emmy has come into her own working for Woman's Friend and is given more opportunities for her journalistic ambitions. At the same time, she is determined to help others with life issues. Some of the entanglements that Emmy gets into seem a little far fetched, but that's ok. They're entertaining.
