The formidable Henrietta Bird has now departed Woman’s Friend magazine, and Emmeline (Emmy) Lake takes on the role of the magazine’s wartime advice columnist, despite her earlier ‘Unfortunate Hiccup’.
Meanwhile, her relationship with Charles is going from strength to strength, and her best friend Bunty is now starting to face the future after everything she went through in the Blitz.
In November 1941, the Ministry of Information asks Britain’s women’s magazines to assist in the recruitment of women to work in the war effort. Emmy is thrilled to flex her journalistic muscles and begins a series of articles on the jobs that women are doing.
She and Bunty meet Anne, a young war widow with two small children, and Anne opens their eyes to the huge challenges faced by women war workers. This leads Emmy into a dilemma: how to do her duty to the magazine and the Ministry, whilst also supporting her friends in their challenges, because the two things conflict.
Yours Cheerfully picks up the threads of Dear Mrs Bird and knits them into a great sequel. It has the same cast of characters but expands beyond the world of Pimlico and the Woman's Friend Offices, to take in the reality of working in a Second World war munitions factory.
Whilst retaining the same humour and light touch, Yours Cheerfully offers a testimony to the women and the struggles they were coping with at that time. We see how both Government and Industry are desperate for their service, but, are not at all disposed to help them to contribute effectively with the provision of adequate, convenient and affordable childcare tailored to shift work.
As well researched as ever, this is a funny, touching, warm and uplifting novel, which highlights the difficulties of life on the Home Front and celebrates female solidarity and friendship.

A charming and heartfelt second book in the Emmeline Lake Chronicles…Yours Cheerfully continues Emmy’s life living in London in 1941. World War II is raging overseas and Londoners are coping with rationing, destroyed buildings and their sons, husbands and boyfriends gone off to fight - some to never return. In the midst of all this, Emmy pluckily moves forward with her career at a women’s magazine, relationships with her great friends and the love of her life Charles.
Yours Cheerfully carries on the storyline started in Dear Mrs. Bird in a creative and uplifting manner. Women banding together to help each other, the courage of ordinary people in extraordinary times and the enduring hope of love. I can’t wait for the next installment.
Thanks to #Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.
