Once in a while a simple fuss-free novel comes along to remind you that a book doesn’t always need literary acrobatics to get you thinking. This one -apparently a sequel in a series - wasn’t even on my radar until my Brother Humba convinced me that I would like it. I’m glad I listened.
AJ Pearce has a very gentle touch as she takes us back in time to the thick of WW2 and how women’s magazines were being deployed by the government for their war recruitment program. It’s a very simple story about a young journalist trying to raise attention about female factory workers needing daycare support. It reads as fresh and relatable, because two-thirds of a century later, we’re still not much closer to parity in that department.
I had the privilege of working in an organization that had the reputation for being ‘progressive’ and female friendly. We never got daycare, but at least we got a small mat leave -only for the mothers. Many of my young colleagues have put off having babies because it would mean choosing between a low glass ceiling at work, or the pressure increasing multifold without any support provided. Some of the women even had to resort to bringing the babies to work.
I hadn’t thought about these things for a while, but Yours Cheerfully was a sweet (but not syrupy), and affirmative reminder that there’s so much left to be addressed.

London, autumn, 1941. Emmy Lake has kept her job at Woman's Friend and the magazine is helping the Government's Recruitment Plan to get more women war workers. When Emmy befriends Anne Oliver, a widowed mother of two just starting war work, she makes her the centrepoint of a series of articles about what it is like to do war work. How are the shifts, the conditions etc. But through her new group of friends, Emmy realises that more needs to be done to help the young mothers doing war work. Before the war, the women would stay at home and look after the children. Now their husbands are away overseas and the women work long shifts, who is there to look after the children?
Something must be done to help the women help the war effort.
In her private life, things are going swimmingly, and can I just say, it is lovely to see how many male/female friendships are shown here. It's nice that they are firm friends with no hint of anything more.
Apparently the author is working on a third book in the series, which I am going to get my hands on the minute it is published. This is the comfort series I didn't know I needed.

I loved this! It was so nice to see the growth and maturity in Emmy in this book. I never really thought about what mothers had to do about childcare when working during WW2 so I found that storyline fascinating.

Warm hearted and cheery, if slightly leaning towards saccharine at times, this 2nd book in the Emeline Lake series is full of Keep Calm and Carry On, but has a decent backbone and the audiobook was very well narrated.
