The second instalment in the Emmy Lake Chronicles brought the same level of feel-good, nostalgic writing and was just as enjoyable as the first. I was maybe a little less invested in the story this time around, and the ending was very much just setting up for a third book in the series, but I was engaged and really loved all the characters.
There were quite a number of side plots throughout the story, and I really enjoyed how they all came together. There was a much smaller focus on the magazine and Emmy’s writing itself in this book, which was one of my favourite elements from previously, but the storyline with Anne and the factory nurseries was really important and very interesting too from a historical perspective.
I’ll definitely be looking out for more books in this series as I love the heartwarming feeling they give but with just the right amount of drama and conflict. Overall, another lovely little book!

Book two did not disappoint! I enjoyed seeing Emmy and Bunty again as well as seeing Emmy blossom and continue to work at the magazine and take “ Dear Mrs Bird advice” now named Yours Cheerfully.
If you loved Dear Mrs Bird (and I did) you will without doubt love Yours Cheerfully. Having read the latter some time ago, I wondered if it would matter that I couldn’t quite remember the plot - it didn’t. The book eases us back gently into the 1940s and the newspaper office of Women’s Friend, and reacquaints us with Emmeline and Bunty. Emmeline is still working on the magazine but is given the special task of reporting on wartime recruitment of women in the munitions factories. On her visits she discovers how invaluable the women’s work is, but how limited childcare, pay and conditions restrict their ability to work. One of the women, recently widowed, is sacked for bringing her children to work. Emmeline is determined to help the women fight for decent working conditions. At the same time she is helping out with a women’s problem page on the journal and planning her wedding to Charles!
I listened to this on audiobook - the narrator is absolutely perfect for this book, carefully evoking the accents and tones of voices of this time and conveying male and female characters alike. The narrator is brilliant at conveying emotions, building tension and stoking up the excitement! The book is absolutely perfect to listen to.
This is such a lovely read. It has a bit of a slow start but before you know it you are completely caught up in the excitement of it all. You feel the frustration at the situation of the women and anger at the factory owners. You are caught up in the preparations for Emmeline’s wedding and then hanging onto your seat as you wonder if she’s actually going to get married.
Funny, sad, tender..this would make such a wonderful film!
With thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan UK Audio for a digital copy of this audiobook.

Yours, Cheerfully returns to the lives of best friends Emmy and Bunty. Emmy’s magazine is asked to aid with the ministry’s push to get more women workers. But as she plunges head first into her assignment she realises her new war worker friends are facing difficulties at work.
This is another charming and moving novel by AJ Pearce. I absolutely loved returning to the old characters and old places, it felt like going home. But I also loved meeting the new characters (Ruby being a personal favourite of mine). Pearce’s writing transports you to a different time, I really felt like I was living alongside Emmy and Bunty.
This book felt slightly more light-hearted than Dear Mrs Bird. But it still left me moved, with tears in my eyes. I found myself crying with both pride and happiness during big life events for the characters. I also learnt so much about women workers during WWII that I did not know before.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone that loves light-hearted historical fiction or anyone who enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird. I want to thank Tandem Collective, Picador Books and AJ Pearce for allowing me to read this book and give my personal thoughts.

As cozy as a Sunday night drama on PBS or a cup of hot cocoa, these books don’t disappoint. Emmy is decidedly plucky, but she’s open about her own flaws, and this one touches on interesting issues around women entering the workforce in factories—childcare, unions, and equal pay.
