Yours Cheerfully picks up where Dear Mrs. Bird left off and finds Emmy taking on new professional and personal challenges as WWII continues, including a new mission for the magazine to help the war effort by encouraging readers to become war workers. As Emmy takes on more reporting responsibilities she also makes new friends and gets to see another side of the war effort as she is tasked with reporting on women war workers.
I really enjoyed Yours Cheerfully and enjoyed seeing familiar characters like Emmy, Bunty, Charles, and Mr. Collins again. I like that the magazine is moving in some new directions and that Emmy is becoming more and more of a journalist than she was in the first book. The look into what the Home Front was like for WWII Britain is always fascinating and AJ Pearce has a gift in creating supporting characters with distinct personalities that engage the reader. I appreciate that Pearce addresses the hardships and heartbreak of war with honest emotion, even while the overall story remains optimistic and amusing. I wish the book had been a bit longer in order to develop some of the main characters a bit farther - I want to know more about Mr. Collins and Bunty! - but I hope further books will help scratch that itch for us readers.
Thank you to Scribner for the opportunity to read Yours Cheerfully early! I hope to get the chance to read more about Emmy and her friends as they move through the war and beyond it.
