This volume set me as a solid fan of this series. While I am still smitten with it's predecessor (the Vampire Academy Series) and will likely always think of it as my favorite Mead series that I have read so far, the Bloodlines series has done an impressive job stepping up to the plate. For more on what I though of the first book or a comparison of the two series click here.

This picks up shortly after where Bloodlines left off. Sydney has gone from fallen to exemplary in the eyes of the alchemists but little do they know that she is closer to being 'comfortable' with vampires than they would approve of. I would even go so far as to say that she starts to consider some of them friends. Her growth as a person is impressive. Especially with the constant curve balls being thrown her way. And this book contains one major twist. In addition to the Moroi, Strigoi, dhampires, and alchemists we now get yet ANOTHER group! One who dislikes all the above groups! And those around Sydney may not be all they seem to be....

Adrian is once again the best character for this series! I don't think he will lose that position. We get a bit more in depth with him here. While I liked him before, some moments when he bares his soul really tug on the emotions. He really needs someone to have his back and the odd thing is Sydney is the best he seems to have and she should despise him for what he is.

Forbidden relationships seems to be s strong theme for this book. All characters are struggling here is some way or another it seems. Plus a couple potentially awkward relationships.

The writing is engaging and easy to follow. It left me feeling like I could be a part of everything going on. There were moments of concern, perplexity, sorrow, empathy, etc that I felt for the characters or situations. Richelle Mead has a way of making the characters are real to the reader. I have no doubt that 10, 20 years from now I will still remember them fondly, even long after their stories are done. Luckily they aren't over yet!

These books make me feel like I'm meeting up with old friends.
I love Adrian, so I'm glad he's a big part of this series. A lot of this book was pretty predictable, but I still enjoyed it, and am definitely looking forward to the next book!!

4 stars <3

Not as good as book 1, but SYDRIAN IS EVERYTHING <3

The first book of Bloodlines wasn't bad. I didn't feel like the main point of the book (Jill being in danger) was even present in the book. I feel like Vampire Academy incorporated both Rose and Lissa. But I feel like this series is all about Sydney who isn't even interesting to me at all. She's rude and brainwashed by her organization. I don't feel like she has much common sense or use to Jill at all. I didn't hate the first book but this book was just ridiculous to me. Sydney seemed to cause more harm than good. The only good thing about Sydney is that she's intellectually smart. But what does the help when you're up against crazy vampires and misguided humans with swords? She talks so much and thinks that she understands so many things yet she doesn't notice anything ever.

Angeline was ten times worse. There was no use for her either. She caused nothing but trouble throughout most of the book. She was immature and crazy for the most part. I was disappointed later when Sydney and Sonya couldn't hold their own against humans. Sydney yelled for help and Sonya did really nothing. Considering vampires are supposed to have increased strength, hearing, and smell, I was shocked.

Throughout the whole book Sydney was mean to her teacher who was only trying to help her. Its okay to have personal beliefs but considering the stuff that she dealt with on a daily basis and the fact that she was usually defenseless in all of her dangerous situations, you wouldn't think she would be so opposed to magic. Her teacher was giving her tools that would help in life or death situations but she didn't care. She just went on and o about how much she hated it and disliked her teacher.

In the end, the reason why Sydney couldn't do the spell is because she didn't really want to. She still thought it was wrong and evil deep down just like she thought her friends were. She was still so brainwashed even though she'd already proven that her friends weren't bad. I already knew how she would react to Adrian so that wasn't a shock. I don't feel like Sydney has made any real progress in her life or in the main issue of Jill being protected. She needs to get a restraining order on that fashion designer yet she continues to say that she'll handle her. She needs to stay away from both Sydney and Jill. Therefore, this book gets 2 stars. I'm not sure If I'll even continue with the series.

4.5 stars. I really like how this portion of the series is told by a different character in the previous series. Held my interest all the way to the very last page. Can't wait to start the next one in the series!

Continuing the serie, good reading in the tram / plane / commute, but no real depth

Some interesting new theories pop up and the characters are even more torn between factions.

The growth in Sydney in this book makes her much more bearable even if she still would snap back to her old ways just a little too much. the story line was defiantly interesting though and we are once again gifted to some wonderful Adrian moments... while i may have been on team Dimitri in the VA series i just can't get over how wonderful Adrian is in this series
