I feel I've come to appreciate this book a lot more the third time round.
Sometimes I get the urge to reread. It doesn't happen very often, because I'd usually be trying to get my hands on other books, but when it does, it's a nice feeling. It's like saying hello to the characters I've grown to love.
When I first read Darkfever, I read it slowly. I savoured each word. I find I very rarely take the time to savour words in a book. But I remember distinctly how I've absorbed every word from when it first began. I liked how she thought about lines, from past to present, what was it again? Ahh, lines of demarcation. It struck me at the time because Karen writes beautifully.
This is the beginning of Mac's journey. It's exciting, it's terrifying, has painful moments too, but it's worth every second. You're in for a treat, because it's a long and winding road ahead.
This is when Barrons first appeared. One of the best fictional male leads in PNR/UF. Utterly complex, terrifying, drool-worthy alpha male, a total badass, and perhaps reason enough to read this series.
There is an addictive quality to this book. I can't explain it, but it's there. :)
I love the world Karen crafted. This was a compelling read from start to finish.

The introduction to the world was good. It got me interested and I wanted to keep on reading about it.
Although I do not like character helpless and clueless at first, I did get used to her, and her character got stronger.
It was a good book and a good suspenseful read. I didn't want to put it down, and I just couldn't pinpoint why. It didn't quite have that so-good-i-want-more-more-more, but it just had some addictive quality in it.
When you don't want to sleep yet and it's already late at night, and when you want to put reading above anything else, you know that you've found a good book.
I won't review much because it will get me mixed up with the second book, so I'll just review the next book, now that I'm nearly finished with it.

This is for fans of the Charley Davidson books. She's really pretty, uneducated and concerned about breaking nails while fighting for her life. Also distracted by hot guys while fighting for her life. Essentially she is constantly almost brutally dying but only as a backdrop for admiring sexy men and herself. Also, her sister is murdered (not a spoiler) but there's no resolution there.

YES!!! How did I not know about this series before?? Murder mystery + dark faeries + cool, Buffy-like female MC = Reyes hooked :) I don't get Barrons' charm (although I've been told that he grows on you) and that thing V'lane does is beyond disturbing so I'm giving this 4 stars in the end but I have the second book lined up already *crosses fingers to not be disappointed*
Great read
Author has yet again captured me in a whirlwind of anticipation. Can't wait to begin the next book in this series!

There have been precisely two books that I couldn't make myself keep reading. This is the second.
I made it to page 106, then I just couldn't take it anymore. The characterization is plot-convenient - that is, it's there to keep the plot moving along, not to actually make a believable narrator the reader can identify with.
We're supposed to believe this twit is a strong, smart protagonist? Then she goes TWICE to see a guy who left bruises on her ribs, without a second thought. She tries to justify this as being "numb," after explaining how she carefully planned out her sightseeing/sleuthing/getting in the middle of crazy shit tour.
At the part where she's pondering if the guy who's beaten up on her and tried to choke her is checking out her boobs (ooh! maybe he WANTS her!), I threw it against a wall.
Do not want.

Loved this book! This is my first real taste of fantasy as an adult -- I haven't really read much fantasy since I was younger -- and I am loving it! Mac is a lot to handle, girl needs to grow up a bit. But I am so excited to see where this takes her and how this story develops.
