Enjoy this and the whole series. It is darker than most of Karen Moning's usual work, but an interesting take on the Fae.
Georgia Peach Barbie (Mackayla Lane, "Mac") goes to Dublin to avenge her sister's murder and finds out that she can see they Fae and that they aren't nice. It's interesting to see Mac change from unambitious eye candy to serious hunter. This series is a good entertaining read. The good guys and bad guys aren't completely one or the other which makes it more interesting.

I'm not too sure how to rate this one - it was another characteristically random book for me to choose, and it didn't match the expectations I held for the book. Honestly, I just wanted a smutty fantasy and this wasn't it (I can see it getting steamier in later books but, spoiler alert, you definitely don't get that with this first entry). I also didn't really like anyone in the book, and yet I want to keep reading the series (mostly to see where the romance is heading) and I'm already mid-way through the second book, [b: Bloodfever|344262|Bloodfever (Fever, #2)|Karen Marie Moning|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1302566396l/344262._SY75_.jpg|13411866].

We're following Mackayla Lane, a Southern belle from Georgia, who has gone to Ireland to find out who murdered her sister, Alina, and take her revenge. There's fae involved, along with the mysterious Jericho Barrons (and no I still have no clue what or who he is meant to be, here's hoping that'll get cleared up soon!). It was all a bit random if I'm honest, I think it was well-written and I kept turning those pages, but I feel both weirdly invested, and also just want to skip to a book with actual romantical content.

I'll give it a middle of the road 3/5 stars (might up it to 3.5 if the second book does well as a sequel) - didn't love it, didn't hate it, but was definitely intrigued enough to pick up the second book and start reading it straight away.

Can I say I didn’t like it? I’m surprised, I thought I was going to love this book, it has everything! But it lost me somewhere between the slow pace and the shallow main character.
I’m pretty sure it gets better, there’s a lot of book in this series. I want to know what happens next but it took me so long to finish this one, I don’t think I’ll try the next one when I could pull through this one.

Mac is annoying.
Jericho is so “dark, strong and full of secrets” that he’s plain boring.
Alina, the almighty can’t-do-wrong sister is so overworked in the story that I’m wondering why the author killed her. You could’ve written Alina’s book instead of torturing me with Mac’s.

Maybe I’ll revisit later.

2.5 stars

I did not like this book as much as I thought I would. Got interesting around the end though and I want to know more about the mysterious Jericho Barrons so I'll continue with the next book.

I like this one the best of the 4 so far. It is engaging and has a lot of great mythology to learn and follow.

Well once again I accidentally find myself completely engrossed in another slow burn.

This book is exceptional. The characters are intriguing and the narrative is so good and relatable. There is no romance in this first book, but it's obvious that we are headed toward a relationship - will it be intimate? I don't know. He's hot but mysterious and you never really know who's a good guy and who's a bad guy and doesn't that make it better anyway?

The concept and world-building is fantastic. You aren't spoonfed information, you learn at the same pace as the main character and it is both frustrating and perfect. This author is so good at describing emotion. I am invested.

I will tell you that I DID NOT want to read a series like this right now - I wanted to read smut. This book is not smut, but I simply have to finish the series. That is how good it is. It's not what I wanted and yet all I want is to continue. This will undoubtedly be a top read of the year. I am thrilled to have discovered this author. I love it.

I had this series recommended to me after reading House on Watch Hill by Moning, and I’m so glad I read it. I love when fae stories delve into the darker nature of fae, and Moning full on committed to that. I lovedMac’s dedication in learning what happened to her sister even after Mac realized that the world is vaster than she ever thought possible. I also appreciated the approach Moning took in crafting Mac’s reactions to learning about the supernatural world. In terms of plot, the story felt well paced to me. There was a good mixture of action with research and investigation. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Mac and Barrons. Additionally, I enjoyed Mac’s character growth throughout Darkfever which is made especially apparent when the story details her change from being a bubbly blonde in pastel to black haired all in black to better hide blood stains. I read this via audiobook. I didn’t love or hate the narration. The accents the narrator utilized made sense in terms of the characters’ backgrounds. However, I tired of the southern accent fairly quickly. I can’t wait to continue on with this series.
