The book felt like a really good start and set up but compared to today’s fantasy books, honestly felt like a part 1, not a stand alone book. I can see the set up for potential and just hope the next book brings me more answers than questions. I like the main character, she’s stubborn and I can appreciate her point of view. Looking forward to the series but taking it book by book!
At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. The prologue had words that weren't in English and left me confused. I'm glad I read past the prologue, though. I'm definitely interested enough to read the rest of the series.
MacKayla's sister is murdered in Dublin, so she leaves her hometown in Georgia to track down her sister's killer and solve the murder. She soon finds herself involved with a world she didn't know existed - the world of the Fae. Mac discovers her own hidden powers and struggles to fulfill her sister's wishes,to track down the Sinsar Dubh, a powerful Dark Book. Fun read!

Ahhhh god there's so much wrong with this book, like the sucky writing and the hateful characters and more than a bit questionable m/f interactions throughout but I spend half my life on trains now and this is easy and horribly addictive like eating a whole tube of Pringles in a flavour you don't really like and I didn't even stop to look out of the crummy train window between finishing this and buying book 2 so give me a break okay?
Finally got to finish this. It was a really good book, but took me forever to read! The school year really kills my motivation for leisure reading. x.x
I have mixed feelings about the protagonist. On one hand she's nothing like the wisecracking bookish athletic heroines I usually read. Her propensity to ignore facts and hints staring her smack in the face or ostriching, as she calls it, makes me rabid with irritation. But, as highlighted with her naming of the behavior, she's self aware. The entire book is written in past tense. Mac's future commentary on her actions is nicely contextualizing, but sometimes grating.
I like how we know in advance that she fails. That the heroes don't win (or at least fail to a certain extent). This matches well with the grittiness of the world. I'm curious to see how the unraveling of the world is handled throughout the rest of the series.

This is my first fantasy read in years. It took some adjusting to get into the story and the world. Mac, the main character, is angsty and stubborn. She narrates like she’s telling you an actual story, including asides that make contemporary plot things relevant to something from her past. To me the writing felt very juvenile, but there are some extremely sexual parts which almost felt inappropriate, given the writing style. I wasn’t sure I was going to continue in the series, but the book ends in a way that I find unsatisfying. I’ll have to continue to know what happens!
I need to stop trying to read this book. I hate the writing. I hate the characters (except the old lady that owns the bookstore; she's the best) and just all of it. I'm going to unhaul this just so that I stop torturing myself. That's all.
[3.75 Stars] This Book is idly addicting and I really need the second book right now!
Still I have to say that the writing style wasn't the best.
