It's a nice change of pace fantasy setting wise. And I genuinely enjoyed it. Banged it in a day and immediately started the rest of the series. It was the right amount of dark while still having comedic moments. Ardent was my favorite character then Vic. The romance was nice and I was delighted that it wasn't made a joke of in the book. The title drew me in and I stayed for the wonderful story and surpringly well fleshed out characters. Definitely one I would buy a physical copy of.

3.5 stars rounded down

I liked it, parts of it anyway, but I didn’t love it. The story started out pretty good but I felt my interest fizzling out just when it should have been ramping up. I’m giving it 3.5 stars anyway because I think my waning interest had more to do with me than the book. In the end, I’m just happy it was available at my library as I don’t spend $8.99 on e-books generally and definitely not one by a new-to-me author.

Book was included with the audible prime list, so I went in with leveled expectations. It turned out to be a great read that kept moving and provided an ever-expanding cast of colorful characters. I will likely read the sequels.
