I was so excited to read this book, knowing nothing of lovecraft except the concept of his books. Unfortunately, his tales are plagued. The longer stories tended to be easier to read because they had less oppressive language.
Overall, one star for whoever put these stories together, the last couple seemed to tie it all up to feel like it was all part of the same flawed world. And one other because I did actually quite enjoy "at the mountains of madness", which was also a considerable portion of the book.
However, if you're looking for cosmic horror, I'd say to look for some more recent work from other authors who aren't going to start aggressively discriminating.

Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism
Some of my favourite weird stories were: The Color Out of Space, The Outsider, The Rats in the Walls, The Festival, The Whisperer in Darkness, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
There are fantastic ideas here but I largely found myself not enjoying Lovecraft's writing. Some stories build up to a climax but the tension in individual scenes is largely non-existent. He has a very rambling style and seems to have an obsession with describing in great detail the period of the architecture and furniture in his stories.
We all know Lovecraft was a massive racist and, almost certainly related to this, I think he was just a scaredy-cat. Some of these things which are meant to scare his characters to the point of madness or even suicide simply weren't that scary. Some of them just seemed interesting to study but Lovecraft is clearly so terrified of anything out of the ordinary and expects us to be too.

Kind of amusing, mostly just ok, but The Colour Out Of Space added an entire extra star to this whole collection.
