The main character has bipolar and it’s suggested his love interest struggles mentally. I’m just biased throughout reading the whole book that he should have focused on his mental health rather than dating her. But yes, it’s a great read- if you struggle with mental health, you’ll relate with the ups and downs, seeing his POV and how he thinks. (I don’t want to say they are romanticizing mental illness, I saw it more as he found a friend during his hard times)

I'm not fond of the main characters portrayal, Pat seemed so infantile reading his perspective hurt at times. I also think that the therapist made some really bad decisions - what good therapist
lets their patient believe that they cursed a game? And actually encourages Pat to comply with his father's unreasonable demands and mood swings.
I also thought that
Tiffany was super mean in the book, it's quite hard to buy that they fell in love. She either doesn't talk or curses, especially in the training montage.

Overall I hope more mental health struggles are portrayed in media in the future, but I have some issues with how it was done here.

the word swanky was used too much for my liking, same with the Eagles chanting and fight songs, but i found Pat to be a interesting MC and thought Tiffany kept things fun. i feel like the
memory loss reasoning was overhyped, like what he went through didn't rationalize why the MC going away for 4 years and not remembering anything from that time frame was enough to make someone forget that much of their life
and the Kenny G explanation made more sense once the final 20 pages or so came up. i vibed with the therapist and enjoyed the brotherly relationship
i wish there was a happier ending to the mom and dad's storyline but maybe that's the point of the book is not all stories have a happy ending and you just learn to live with what you have, but still the mom deserves a reward and a hug imo

The writing style was easy to read, it flowed well, and didn't have pages of description (which is such a pet peeve for me.) I could follow the story line well due to its fairly one track goal; Pat wanting to end 'apart time.'

The biggest critique I've seen has been Pats child-like naivety, how he understood things, how he spoke, the words he used. I do agree that this can make people feel that his (and in general) mental illness is infantilized, but also mental illness can affect us all differently, especially if we don't have the right support systems in place to navigate the world. And him potentially having a traumatic brain injury can also help explain why he reacts the way he does. I also felt like the other characters really let Pat down, before, during and after his institutionalisation.

The book also surprisingly had spoilers for classic American literature, I know they've been out for decades but I'm slow okay! And an honestly embarrassing amount of football talk, but I could appreciate that it was the only way Pat was able to form connections.

For me, this was a story about mental illness and how hard it is to pick up the pieces of your life after an episode.

A relatable and emotional read.

This was an excellently written book. Most of it is chronological yet the pacing and how they choose to reveal important information from the past is brilliant. I originally picked this up because I usually read fictions in between my nonfiction/informative book reads, but I’m so glad I read it. I got the audio version and the narrator did an excellent job at adding to the atmosphere. The time of the story, 2006, makes so much sense to how mental illness, bro culture, and race is talked about/dealt with. It is not a love story like the movie tried to make it. It’s a lot more than that. It’s raw and complex yet it’s simple enough to read casually in a day if you wanted to.
