The Getaway

Lamar Giles

4 stars because I ate this up. I would’ve loved it even more as a teen. Social horror is such an awesome genre and this kept me entertained throughout. There was some great commentary on racism, classism and capitalism, and Giles also wrote the gore scenes really well in a way that didn’t feel cheesy or overdone. While the book was fast paced, it wasn’t a favorite for a couple of reasons, which was mostly the ending. It felt a bit cliche?? And just fell flat for me. Also I still had a bunch of questions at the end that were never answered. But, I would still recommend for YA fans who like horror/thriller with social commentary—it’s a fun read!!

i would like a sequel or tv adaptation.. please and thank you

Interesting concept, but less than stellar elocution. The pacing is so jarring and inconsistent, the characters’ voices are indistinguishable from one another which makes the sudden POV changes even more confusing. This was so jam packed that certain plot elements lost their emotional punch. I didn’t find the characters or their dynamic likable. That being said, the concept is interesting- I think teen readers will enjoy (even if they do deserve books that let them think for themselves rather than everything being told to them).

I did NOT want to stop listening to this one last night, and thought about it all day at work today, impatiently waiting for the opportunity to finish. The Getaway was dark, brutal, graphic, and so so good. It felt very much like watching a Jordan Peele movie! Highly recommend.

I’m totally classifying this as horror. I guess I knew it from the cover. Not until ½ way in do things really get going, but I’m glad the author took half the book to set it all up. Creepy, disturbing, and riveting. At least YA - due to the horror & violent evil.
