Definitely a page-turner. Super interesting premise and world building. The eerie bits were really well done. The final twists made the last hundred or so pages go pretty quickly. The commentary on racism and wealth inequality was very timely.

Breathlessly pulled along through the story. If you're skeptical at the start, don't stress, it will pick up FAST. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, in the sense that I wanted more. I'd love a series in this terrible, fascinating parallel world.

LOL 😂😂😂 let me first say, this read had my head spinning!
The Getaway follows four friends living in this makeshift, island-like county that is secluded from the dangers of the world - that is seemingly ending. we have multiple POVs and perspectives that in my opinion added to the delivery of the plot and were needed because reading it from one POV - specifically Jay’s [annoying ass] probably would have pissed me off lol.
now although, these friends think the seclusion their in is live-saving; perspectives begin to switch when shit starts coming unglued. they’re supposed to be grateful - they have a place to live, a roof over their heads, food to eat, and jobs to work - but things take a turn when their friend Connie comes up missing, the bigwigs are walking the grounds - workplaces and all, their houses LOCK THEM INSIDE, drones appear and they are NOT allowed to leave the enclave.

hidden under many layers there are points towards racism, workplace exhaustion, and identity crisis and i think those were wrapped in pretty neatly. the waterslide scene will forever be etched into my brain. i can reason with Jay’s perspective of wanting to be optimistic in the face of adversity - but at some point my love you have to open your eyes to what’s around you and adapt. Zeke was the only character that made me feel like he had some sense - and that is so true even in our modern-day
all it takes is what one person to make a change, setting off a chain of events that gets others to open their eyes and fight for what’s right.

overall, i enjoyed this read as my first dystopian - there were a TON of crazy things going on and the twists kept me on board as soon as they started twisting, i could not put it down.
my rating falls at a three for a few reasons:
some of the characters felt a little underdeveloped to me; in my opinion, a POV from the villains would have also added to the story, especially towards the end when the chaos was unfolding.
im just not a big fan of horror to be transparent, so although YA, the talk of cannibalism was just beyond me LOL.

This book started out quite slow. By about 30-40% the plot picked up and I was getting into it, but I found the last 20% or so to be chaotic and layering on unnecessary evils - we didn't need
canabalism
on top of the
slavery
to know these were bad people.

This was so dark, but really good. I can’t believe it’s considered YA. I could never guess how it would end or what would happen.
