dear mungo,
“the sun was not yet fully overhead in the sky, and everything beautiful was already ruined.”
i found this line from one of your pages and it probably encapsulates whatever sweet and twisted thing happened to you in glasgow. my heart echoes a yearning ache when i remember your name. the weight of emotional baggage you had passed unto me, enough to make me go and seek therapy. did I regret it somehow? no! like you said my dear, “it was good to put your weight on someone else, even if it was just for a while.” and i hoped i did helped you unloaded some of it.
“it was nothing that felt like everything.”
when i think of you, mungo, i think of innocence. the curiosity of your mind, and the capacity of your heart to love was admirable. your ability to accept and forgive, even if it’s too much, was very gallant of you. i can’t imagine, how you manage to offer it even growing up in a problematic household and raised in a society where all they try to tell you was “to fit in.”
i think of toxic masculinity. your narrative strongly pin points this warped ideal of violence, dominance and emotional repression needed for the male species to thrive in the society. but you were nothing sort of that. you were soft and gentle - a contrast to the norms which made you an easy target to hit on – especially on that fishing trip.
i love how your story criticizes these stupid norms though by opening the reader’s eyes on how they destroy intimacy and individuality. it depicts a sad but relevant portrayal of when society fails to protect the most vulnerable.
i think of james, of course. the very sweet boy, your anchor and safe haven in that vicious world. your bond felt like a quiet rebellion against everything. it was tender and healing – the stolen moments and the lingering passionate kisses. i felt the fear in your bodies, of course, with the possible threat of being outed in that timeline. it was on his arms that i found you being true and full of yourself. it was precious and precarious at the same time.
how your story ended was ambiguous. it sure made me hope though even with no clear resolution. it felt true to life. it made me realize that survival is complex and nasty, healing takes a lot of time and of course, even in the most dangerous times, love do exist.
still hoping for that ending,
rhuno 🖤
