I love this book very much. How can you not love a book about a family spanning decades and covering so many different people whose lives were touched and changed? I read this one because I remembered finding it on the shelf as a kid, flipping to the bit about Ruth and Idgie falling in love, devouring that chapter, and shoving it shamefully back on the shelf, and I wanted to let myself read the damn thing as an adult who's out of the closet. Ruth and Idgie are obviously the heart of the book, but the rest of it is wonderful too.

This novel did not age well; though “realistic” for the setting, the lot of it was not needed to carry the story forward. The story also explored the lives of multiple characters, which I found made it harder to follow & contributed to unsatisfactory character development (this may just be on me). I was also hoping that the novel would go more in depth on Idgie & Ruth’s relationship as the book itself markets their relationship as a focus, but the exploration of their relationship & them as individuals was also very unsatisfactory.

I really loved this book. Just keep in mind it was written in the 80s about the 30s. Is it the most PC book in the world? Of course not. But it's still really sweet and the exploration into the motives of the characters is rich and deep. The movie was good but the book is even better.
