I find this narrator irritating. Will try this again in print.

I came for the lesbian content and was not disappointed. Politically outdated, but worth the read.

This book was really difficult to get through. I watched the movie back in the 90’s when I was a kid, so I didn’t remember much. But this book was filled with racist views, racial slurs, derogatory terms and stereotypes. I find it very unsettling and disturbing and kinda disgusting when yt authors feel so comfortable flinging around this kind of language even if it reflects the era. The theme seemed to be “I’m yt and not racist, but still think black people are beneath me, and I’m afraid of them.”

“Thank the lord he made you white.”

Barf.

Yeah, they're gay. Better read than the movie watch, in my opinion, and I wish it had been made into a television series. The depth of the people of whistlestop is well recorded and the love between Idgey and Ruth is beautiful, yet not explicit. I loved the format of storytelling and the short chapters made it a quick read for someone who struggles when a chapter is too long.

I’ve been meaning to read this for years. I knew I would enjoy the queer love between Idgy and Ruth, but I hadn’t expected to also love the sweet friendship between Evelyn and Ninny! Evelyn’s development and how she thought of herself and her life touched me; and that sharing good food throughout many generations made this book even better..

This was an enjoyable read. Lots of likable, realistic characters, surprising scenarios, and people to root for. Also lots of down-home stories and tall tales that remind me of all those small towns, whether train stop towns or former coal mining towns or farm towns, that are falling by the wayside. It's a product of its time, so there's some racial stereotyping that wouldn't fly today, but otherwise a good, fun story. I'll be imagining Idgie for years to come.
