A bit heavy handed with all the lessons. But that is par for YA.

What a great book! It has the perfect mixture between fiction, real life events and mystery. It takes a while for the suspense to build, which was necessary for the reader to really understand and learn about cultural and historical backgrounds and the emotions behind what’s happening. I learned a lot about Native American culture from this book and it has a great way of portraying different sentiments. I was very angry, sad and frustrated about the many injustices the communities had and still have to endure. The characters are all very lovely and full of life.
This book will be one of my highlights of 2024 for sure!

I found this young-adult book fascinating.  This author has some of the characters from her first book in this second book, but it can be read independently.  I knew nothing about Native American reparations of their ancestors and objects from museums and colleges before this story.  The added mystery of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) made this story one that kept my interest from the beginning until the end.  I wish there were books like this when I was in high school.

There is so much to say about this book. It is 10 years after the book "Firekeeper's Daughter", which I did not read. The trigger warnings of that book are very intense, and so I was hesitant to read it. This book is still intense, but it covers some slightly different issues.  Even though many reviewers feel this is not quite as good as the previous book, I still think it was great.

I was RAGING while reading this. I didn't know about the serious lack of public institutions and their repatriation of Native American HUMAN REMAINS. Harvard still has thousands of items and humans that belong to the tribes. She doesn't specifically call out Harvard in the story (although there is a provocative quote), but that is a real-life example that I found via Google.

It's also important to note that this is a thriller, and I try never to read thrillers. This made me incredibly anxious, but it was still a great read. This book does contain spoilers for Firekeepers Daughter, so if you don't want to be spoiled, read that one first. If you are like me and are intimidated by those content warnings, give this one a try. The real-life context alone is worth it.
