That was a good, smooth ride.
Combining shades of Christie's [b:And Then There Were None|16299|And Then There Were None|Agatha Christie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1638425885l/16299._SY75_.jpg|3038872] in spades, this is quite the classic example of a Japanese closed room mystery. The narration held its pace and intrigue, and there was enough information for readers to catch up, and not get lost in the more inane details. The book is concise, and the author did not waste any page on mundane details that did not impact the ongoing plot.
I have always liked a plot within the plot type of books, and I did like the reveal - it was well placed, and almost unpredictable, though you do get some inkling of it in the beginning. Arguably, there were some parts which seemed convenient, but the overall story makes up for it.
I loved the story telling. This was a clean, straight, delightful mystery read for the fans of the genre - the author did not stylize or mutate any of the elements that make for a good mystery book, and that is perhaps one of the best features of this.

When a close friend of mine recommended this Japanese murder mystery book to me, I knew that it would be a doozy. There's just something fun about mystery novels, and the fact that the victims of The Decagon House Murders all held codenames after the greatest mystery writers of all time was a fun detail. Despite the fact that the version I read was directly translated from Japanese, the story was not overly simplified and still held its essence in English. I will be honest — the format of this book was rather odd and I didn't really like how there wasn't an introduction to both perspectives at the start. It was rather confusing to try and figure out who was who and the dynamics of their relationships. However, as time progressed and the plot gets more exciting, I understood the need for two perspectives. Can I also just say that this mystery was absolutely diabolical? 😱 I definitely did not guess the right person at all and I was super shocked when everything was revealed at the end. The reasoning behind this character's motive was a little weak in terms of plot, but it still works nonetheless. I would definitely recommend reading this during the day if you're squeamish! 😅
Enjoyed this one less than expected - fairly stand “and then there were none”
Loved the mystery but the characters were dry as hell and I needed more spice. I'm totally intrigued by the shinhonkaku genre though!
