Kinda mad but it was fun. I love the decagonal aspect, and speculation that drives me crazy, but it was fun

I picked this book up randomly at a local bookstore because I love a locked room mystery. A group of students from a prestigious Japanese university become stranded on an abandoned island. The group is part of the Universities Mystery Club and they see the excursion as a great excuse to write new material for the Mystery Club magazine. One by one, however, they begin to die leading the rest of the group to become more and more fearful (and suspicious) of each other.

I thought this was a great book! I didn't see the twist coming which is always so fun. There were some things that were a bit muddled in the translation (like the "plates", I think they meant plaques or signs) but overall I really enjoyed the book. A fun, interesting read.

3.25 Stars.
A Japanese locked-room mystery fiction genre also called “honkaku mystery,” or “orthodox mystery.” This book could be considered as a retelling of the Agatha Christie's masterpiece " And Then There Were None", which is what made me so eager to read this book. Last year, I read the 1st volume of the manga version of this book that was sent to me from Netgalley and I really loved it (even more than the actual book).

At the end, I was a bit disappointed by this book for I felt that the author just took Christie's story, made some little changes, then added just some extravagant elements to veil our vision of his plain plot which wasn't his own. He changed some aspects of the original book like the characters which I found that he didn't work really hard to develop unlike Christie's which each one had his/her own story and his/her own crime that he/she is judged for. Here, we have a bunch of students who knew each other for they are in the same mystery club, giving themselves nicknames derived from famous authors and all of them are being punished by the murderer for one and same so called "crime". Then, the author just added some elements about space and a decagon shaped house made by a legendary architect that went psycho one day and killed his wife then burned his amazing house.

To be honest, I wasn't impressed at all for I was really waiting for something way better than what we got at the end. It can't win against the genius of Christie's mind and her great imagination.

This book could have been considered as a Dark Academia if not for the island. It reminded me a bit of "If We Were Villains" which I didn't like that much but it had the same vibes.

Very complicated set up with lots of characters. A Japanese take on Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” ….
