Ok so last year I gave this 4 stars or 3.5 but upon my reread I changed my mind to 5 stars. It is honestly such a good book. Young has a way of writing emotions that are so poignant it gives you a near visceral reaction. She doesn’t shy away from blood and gore nor does she shove insta-love down your throat like some YA fantasy novels can. The love story was a slow burn with lots of complex emotions and I loved that about it. I just wish there was more but there is another book on the way. Just gotta wait now.

1st reread:

i love u fiske.....

4.5 stars
this book made me feel a lot of emotions so rtc

Maybe it's because I just finished Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but I connected with this book really well. I could feel Eelyn's love for her home, her fierce pride, and how important honor is to them. I felt genuinely upset for her when she was captured, rooted for her escape, and hated the Riki. I actually had to set it down and take a breather because I was so mad for her lol

When Fiske said he wants to go back to Hylli with her... my heart

My only issue with this book is how long it is. Not in a "I wish this was longer because it's so amazing" way (which it is) but a "This should've been fleshed out more" way. While the enemies to lovers is there, it's in first person so it makes it hard to see Fiske's point of view. I could see Eelyn's growing feelings but not Fiske's, even though they are definitely there. I also wish the final battle had been longer. It built up and built up and lasted for a chapter.

Otherwise, I 100% recommend this book to anyone who enjoys vikings or enemies to lovers (or badass female warriors). Loved it!!

A good story about perspective and fighting in wars blindly. About humanity and love.
The characters were believable and the story immersive. I love her writing style so that’s always good. Lost a .25 because of open ended questions, nothing crazy for the story but definitely left me wanting answers or wondering why those scenes were included. Lost another .25 because it had a heavy reliance on a religion format but the story could have been told without it, so felt a lot of forced scenes and tie ins to the Norse religions just because Vikings. Otherwise a lovely story about forgiveness and pain.

I really wanted to love this book but it failed on so many levels

Characters - 2/5
Apart from the main character, all the others felt flat. They had no substance. I felt nothing for them, I could neither love nor hate them. They could've all died and it would have changed nothing for me.
But that doens't mean I loved the MC either. I just liked her enough to not DNF the book

Romance - 2.5/5
I have no idea why they fell in love or how or when ?

Plot - 3/5
Nothing original. It could've been great but it was so predictable. Everything I expected and didn't want to happen did.

Writing - 4/5
The writing was flowing.

Angst - 1/5
There was no angst in an Enemy to lovers trope! I need explanations!!

The action was great! The only reason for the Three star rating
