Not a big memoir reader, but this was amazing. Listened to the audiobook definetly upped the experience. Good insight into Hollywood and the lives of childhood actors.

A thoughtful and intense memoir, and an important story to tell. I vaguely knew of Jennette as I’d seen a couple of episodes of iCarly and knew of Sam & Cat. Jennette’s story just goes to show the cliche of you never know what’s going on behind closed doors. It feels exhausting just reading about the constant second guessing she had to go through to keep her mother (and the other bad actors in her life) happy.

I found - as I always do - the eating disorder passages, which dominated the later parts of the book very hard to get through, but they felt important in showing how hard she found it to deal with those issues and the underlying causes, as well as how low she sunk into bulimia.

I liked her dark humour, it was quite British. It’s not often that I would find the announcement of a schizophrenic delusion like a moment of light relief, but I did here!

I truly hope writing this was a cathartic experience for her. I feel bad for saying I enjoyed this book a lot as happy moments were scarce. In spite of it all, I'm glad she seems to be in a much happier, healthier space now.

McCurdy's story is honest, gripping, and terribly sad, yet she tells it in a way that's compelling, interesting, and often funny. This book is full of vulnerability and does an excellent job of conveying the experience of abuse and psychological disorders. I wish I could read it for the first time again and again.
