So well written but as expected, painfully sad.  I’m so glad she found a medium to successfully share such a powerful story.

This did not feel like a non fiction book, not because it did not feel real but because it was so easy to read. McCurdy let us in to her head and was so vulnerable despite spending her childhood exposed to the public. She was not afraid to say the ugly truths and the thoughts she had but did not say. She had a depressing tone at points that reminded me of how Plath would judge those around her. She condensed years of abuse and neglect into just over 300 pages. This narrative was not what I expected in that she was able to narrate in her old childhood perspective while still making it evident this was satirical and in retrospect and cleverly switches to her current perspective and breaking the lies she believed. This is self aware, raw, brutal, real and needed.
