I don’t know if it was the audiobook narrator but every character was extremely annoying. It was hard to root for anyone. The way every sentence started with a present tense gave me a headache. “Sitting on the helicopter, twisting her rings, she swallowed her guilt at being so selfish.”

1 ⭐️
  • Absolute trash.
  • A thriller — child kidnapping; Gabriel Corado.
    • I don’t think the third person perspective helps here.
    • This book is actually about crazy Americans. Cult mentality and fake news run rampant; the American culture is obsessed with news and drama.

  • I hate the writing — it’s very formulaic.
    • I feel like it’s trying to sound natural but it’s not succeeding. Like, writing a 16 year old girl is hard and it just comes out stereotypical if it’s not right. It’s so bad.

  • I don’t have empathy for any of the main characters; they are all awfully written — especially Corina. Her reaction to her son is really over-excessive. If she is a professional journalist, wouldn’t she react a little more calmer; she should be use to the dealing with the media + law enforcement but she really is overreacting.

  • They all have very stereotypical things pulling them in different directions; the husband Robert is secretly doing something with a woman, Corina is getting sexual abuse from her boss, Charlotte is with the older guy. I know it’s all suppose to be misleading to the reader but it just comes off as boring and repetitive. Misdirection is not thrilling.

  • Page 140: “Charlotte was different. She stepped out of her Upper East Side life and looked up to him. Vince Tarone. She gave him the respect he sought and, god, he loved her for it. And now, more than ever, he wanted to protect her.” 🤮🤮

  • I also hate all the random characters — like, do I need to know all about these people?? Why are they important to the story!?? It doesn’t make any sense.

  • It’s almost melodrama — it’s like watching a soap opera.

  • The phone call with the delivery boy — isn’t that guy running a news corporation? Not very smart. 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • Misdirection galore.

  • Kathy Miller — a Canadian. Of course. I hate that she never had a child either — they make her look even crazier. She dies. 😅

  • I hate that they say Canada, instead of Ontario. Urghhh. And the author is Canadian — like wtf. 😳

  • Of course the biological mother dies too. 😳

  • MELODRAMATIC MUCH — 💩
    • Things can be complex without being dramatic. This ain’t it y’all.

This author never disappoints with plot and characters

Really good Thriller that kind of got me out of a reading slump.
I loved that the chapters weren't long and that the book had different perspectives. It was perfect tho, that you don't get the bad guys perspective and I remains a secret till the police and family find out who took the boy. This way it could be a plot twist later.

I was able to put the book down in between without having a big desire to keep reading right away also after a couple months now I couldn't really remember if I loved the book or not that's why it's not 4 full stars.

This book was terrible. The main character is insufferable. The supporting characters are all idiots. The same thing happens over and over, with the main character acting overly dramatic for everything. It was a massive no for me.
