OK, technically, I didn't read this. I saw it performed at the Kansas Thespian Festival by Maize High School, and it was an incredible production. I loved the double meaning of the title (the literal proof Catherine stored in her drawer and whether or not she can prove its authorship). The juxtaposition of scenes from both the past and present to create dramatic tension was so clever, and I kept second guessing Catherine's sanity along with the play's other characters. I also appreciated that Hal was drawn to Catherine because of her wit and intellect, not her face.
SpoilerWhile part of me wishes that Hal and Catherine's romance could have been developed more, I loved the uncertain note that the play ended on. Anything else wouldn't be as consistent with the play's theme.
The most telling sign of how much I loved this play? Every time the lights blacked out for scene changes or intermission, I feared that the story would end and I'd have to step back into an unknowable, terrifying world without the comfort in knowing that these characters felt the same way. An absolute triumph as well as my favourite play.

the theme itself was compelling & sad, but otherwise it was...fine enough. I have a monologue from this play, so bonus!
