Not what I usually read, and I did come in at the second book, however it was simple enough to get into and I never felt like I was missing much about the characters.
This book goes into a lot of detail of the different culture and lifestyle in 1950s northern Scottish Isles (or, at least the lifestyle which the characters are flashbacking to) - it felt like I have learnt a lot from reading this. A shame I didn't read it before I travelled to the UK a few years ago!
I really enjoyed the chapters that were told from the perspective of a man with dementia. It gave a very refreshing change of narrative point of view, and I loved following his train of thought - which felt natural and gave context to his interactions with others.
The book is a murder mystery - but really that is incidental to some of the history of these islands, which Peter May has sought to share through this book.

I read the first of the Lewis trilogy a year or two back, thoroughly enjoyed it, then just forgot to get back to it so was very happy to have it for a holiday read.
I devoured it in a couple of days, enjoying it every bit as much as the first - and especially loving the stark scenery, which becomes such a character in these books.
Great mystery, well written.
