Sue Grafton

Sue Grafton continues to end her novels by having Kinsey trapped in an inescapable situation, ending chapter, cutting to epilogue where Kinsey is back in the world, the bad guy is caught, and the case is wrapped up. And I continue reading....

Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

BOTTOM-LINE:
A decent story, but not a home run
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
Kinsey meets an accident victim in physical rehab, and he wants her to find out who ran him off the road and why
.
WHAT I LIKED:
Kinsey gets to know Bobby in the early stages of the case, and the mystery of the case is intriguing. It takes a while for the pinball to hit enough buzzers to do anything, particularly as his only real evidence is that he remembers knowing "something" and that he was in danger, but not what it was or from whom. The further developments of Kinsey's character and her sense of justice are awesome.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
One of the sub-characters, his step-sister, is a caricature and a wasted distraction. Equally, another sub-story with someone trying to take advantage of Henry is both obvious and boring.
.

This is the third time I’ve read this mystery where Kinsey befriends a young man at the gym rehabilitating after a car accident and gets hired to figure out what happened that night. I remember this being an early favorite of the series but in re-engaging I liked it less than both A and B. The denouement in a morgue felt almost cartoony.

I usually have troubles keeping up with series that aren't really connected, but I'm loving this Kinsey Millhone series. There is just enough to keep the books connected, without needing me to remember everything from the previous books. Love this series, and I'm looking forward to the next book!
lighthearted mysterious

These books really are addicting. I really enjoy Kinsey as a character and her thought process. It really brings the reader along in the moment and I honestly am trying as hard as she is to put the pieces together. It fascinates me that Sue Grafton chooses the moments she ends on, many times in the height of the climax and chooses to not bother with the denouement.
adventurous mysterious sad fast-paced

Short Review: I think it's a bad idea to read this series along side Stephanie's, i was bored listening to this. There is no funny side kick. Rarely any jokes. You can tell this book is older thou, like real old, my audio book does the whole "end of disc 1" "start of disc 2", at some point Kinsey was in a fight with her landlord over rent, it was $200 a month! Seriously, that's so cheap, but this book was written like in 1986 so that's why. I read these out of order mainly because my library doesn't have them all available all the time, i have read B but that was forever ago, so i have no idea why Kinsey has an arm injury. I felt bad for Bobby thou, escapes one accident to end up dying in another, thought maybe he could become a love interest.
