Not as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it. It still has the fun, metafiction aspect that the first book had that I really enjoyed, introduces a new cast of fun characters, and has a good mystery to keep you hooked.
I think there were two things that made me enjoy it less than the first. First, Ernest is a bit of a self-centered jerk in this book. Yes, character development and all that - he does realize it and get better - but it's a bit of a pain watching someone make obvious and completely avoidable mistakes (especially when you're in his head). The fact that Juliette had to leave the train to get him to realize what an ass he was being felt a bit like she was being fridged - obviously without the gore/death, but serving the same purpose in providing motivation .
Second, while I did enjoy a lot of the metafiction, it did get stale. I am, however, completely willing to acknowledge that it may be because I read "Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone" relatively recently, so had there been more of a break between them, I doubt this would have been an issue.
That said, this was a good book! I really loved the new characters - they were an entertaining and provided a good fill-in to the family from the first book. The mystery, further, was as intriguing and well-developed as the first. In fact, I think I actually liked this mystery more as it didn't rely ona case of hidden identity/"that person you thought died secretly survived" like the first book did.
If you enjoyed the first book, you will probably enjoy this one, as well. It's another solid, well developed fair play mystery.
