Honestly I was really enjoying this book until like 75-80% of the way through. (Interestingly, this is about the time they finally have sex.) I was ready to come on here and shout ROMANTASY DONE RIGHT! But jeeeeeeezus Faith gets so annoying. And she was annoying to begin with!

Faith falls through a portal or whatever from Modern Times to some high fantasy setting (medieval, natch) and, despite being stuck there for a significant period of time, does not adapt (or even attempt to adapt) to her surroundings at all. At all at all. Like, babe, I went to Japan for two weeks and had basic phrases and etiquette down within days. You are willfully and intentionally creating misunderstandings.

This book was published in 2021 but Faith talks like she's from 2013 - "girl parts" and "lady business" are two phrases that I had hoped to never read or hear again, she calls absolutely everyone a "dick" (would absolutely love some creativity or variety), and it is (I guess) meant to be endearing or cute that she mouths off at absolutely everyone (mostly for things that seem to be the consequences of her own actions?). I love a strong female character but I didn't find Faith clever or smart, just... antagonistic? And cavalier. It's giving NLOG and just felt real icky.

There is also an entirely unnecessary description of the MMC's "junk" (ugh). We know what a penis looks like! And if we don't, we live in Modern Times and can Google image search.

My final gripe: this is a long book, which I'm fine with because the world building was Pretty Good and I love a high fantasy adventure. BUT!!!!!! Shit got repeated so. much. Yes, we remember that thing that happened 2 chapters ago. Now it was 7 chapters ago but you just mentioned it 5 chapters ago AND 4 chapters ago so no, I do not need another recap. Oh, now we're doing a whole "Previously On" flashback of the thing that happened 11 chapters ago and has been mentioned every other chapter since then.

I honestly did not think Ruby Dixon had a slow burn romance in her - Ice Planet Barbarians is my only other RD reference and it is very much the opposite of a slow burn - but the pacing of the romance here was pretty good. I will probably read the next book in this series just because Faith isn't in it. >:) And in fairness, this book was better than Fourth Wing OR ACOTAR.

I normally really like Ruby Dixon. But this one missed the mark for me. I didn’t feel like Faith and Aron really had chemistry.

It was definitely cute. I found the main character Faith very believable as a modern adult woman dropped into a medieval type magic filled world. I also found the slow character progression of Aron believable. I mean, he's supposed to be a god, and the personification of arrogance. Any improvement on his personality is going to be slow. And maybe not a lot of progress at all. But the end was very sweet, the dummy didn't realize he loved her until he lost her and then traded away his eye (not exactly HIS eye) to get her back from the world of the dead. And I loved the happily ever after, with the two of them both changing together and building a life.... yeah, the whole thing was cute. Did it rock my world and make me question my own existence or something deep like that? Nope. But it was still enjoyable.

I normally love this author but struggled to finish this one. Both of the MCs motivations and characters were so flimsy, and the spice was really repetitive.

Ruby Dixon completely outdid herself with this book! It was amazing, the plot and characters felt so unique. I highly recommend this book if you like fantasy, magic, and slow-burn romance.

PS. If you need more to persuade you to read this book; this is the first review I've ever written on this site, and I've been on here for years. THAT'S how much I love this book.

Happy readings!

This is such a shift from what I’m used to from Ruby Dixon, but I was NOT disappointed.

So many characters to love.

And the way Aron shows his affection is 🔥

So exited to get into a whole new world from RD.
