I liked the sections written from the POV of Lyudmila the most, but the other sections written by Eleanor Roosevelt and the marksman were super grating. They felt really heavy handed and the ER sections in particular stood out for just providing historical context, not at all like a real person wrote them.

Overall, it was fine. Some cliches/too perfect moments but not an overwhelming amount. Honestly, the afterword and the author’s notes about the book being published just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine were maybe the most interesting to me.

I think it's safe to say that I love all things Kate Quinn.
This book wasn't as good as The Rose Code or some other books I've read by Kate but I loved it nonetheless.
Mila is a single mother & student who dreams of becoming a historian when war breaks out, as she has shooting abilities she decides to join the front line and becomes a sniper with 300+ official kills under her belt.
Kate takes liberties with the love story as she explains at the end of the book, while I enjoyed them I do wish we knew the truth of her personal relationships, however the book is and should be more about the war and getting the US to help in the efforts.
Mila's story takes us through her time on the front lines that leads to her understandable PTSD. Then we follow her on her tour of the US as a propaganda effort from Russia to get the help from the US.
We learn that after her US tour she becomes an instructor instead of going back to the front lines, she serves out the rest of her time in the military, she finishes her schooling and becomes the historian she dreamt of being and passes away at an old age with her son by her side.
This book has all the emotion and details to keep you interested, even with the fiction tossed in to complete the story.
