This was such a fun read. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fun, quick read. The characters were so relatable and realistically written. The atmosphere and world of this book was intricate, and listening to the audiobook along with the ebook made the world come alive. This is one of my favorite books of 2024 so far.

Very mid, but entertaining at times.

The main character is just so incredibly boring. She puts no effort into anything, despite claiming she wants to succeed. Yes, there is a binding that prevents her, but she knows nothing. I don’t blame Diana for taunting her as legacy. She point blank hasn’t shown that she belongs in the school. (Also how is it possible that Alex figured the binding thing and not one of her teachers?)

Her friendship with Eva might be bland, but man oh man her relationship with Alex is even blander. They go from hating each other to soft tender love so fast. And it’s not even the hot version of enemies to lovers. He legit never talks to her, and then bam. He is in loooove. Their relationship makes me cringe, and I skimmed through every spice scene because I don’t care and they don’t make a believable couple.

All the secrets don’t seem like secrets, nothing is ever at stake, and everything gets resolved within a few chapters. The parents are weird characters, I have no idea how the magic system works, and it’s just.. not well thought out.

I guess I could have given it less stars, but some parts were fun and I liked the ambiance.

The tone is very High School Drama. Definitely a focus on the flaws.

Odette strives to attend Spellcasters Spy Academy since she was young, but has put no effort into pursuing this dream even with her parents trying to stop her. At least a little effort would of been nice, since it is her dream, even if teenagers don't always exactly think about such things. It is a story, we have the ability to suspend a bit of reality. At least physical training since she wasn't able to practice her magic.

Enjoyable friendship, the characters were superficial but it was nice to have all the connections and interpersonal relationships. That was done well. It's a shame about the insta-love 'mate connection' sort of skewed that building of a friend group, which could of been cute, but with the shortness of the first book it can be excused a little bit.
