The best book of 2024 for me so far. I listened to the German audiobook on bookbeats. Big recommendation.
I was hooked by the story from beginning to end. Reflections about gaming and life and death/love and friendship/creativity and design.
The alternation between the virtual and real world has enhanced this reading journey. Also loved the references to literature (e.g. the title).

While the premise is intriguing and the writing has moments of brilliance, the pacing can be uneven at times. The exploration of the gaming industry and themes of creativity are insightful, but some sections may feel slow for readers not deeply interested in video game development.

This book had a great analysis of the different characters and their relationships. The key dynamics were interesting but strained for the majority of the book. This unfortunately left me feeling sad, disappointed, and a bit heartbroken upon finishing the book. I have an appreciation for how realistic the characters, their relationships, and their stories are. They just hurt a bit kinda how life hurts.

I had a really hard time trying to invest in these characters. Honestly they all suck but maybe that’s the point? It also felt like a person that’s never played video games wrote a book about video games.

Imagine resenting your traumatized childhood friend, but still keeping up with the man who took advantage of you. I hate you Sadie Green.

Although Sadie was insufferable, I like when books show me a realistic character. Everyone has flaws and Sam and Sadie were no exception to the rule. If you are searching for morally perfect characters this isn’t for you. This book is not a light hearted read, but you will learn a lot from it. As someone stepping into adulthood, this book opened my eyes. I can pinpoint so many characters with people I already know.
