*books that make you go play Oregon Trail* I don't even know where to begin. The characters just feel so REAL, they're messy and selfish and young and reckless and care for one another so deeply. Somehow Zevin took stubborn, uncommunicative characters and made me not want to DNF for miscommunication issues, but instead I really felt for them and what they felt like they couldn't share which in turn made them resentful and just wow. The story really puts you through your 20s and how stupid it can be, but also puts in some harsh realities that can just turn your world upside down. No need to be a gamer to really love this book, because what are games if not more storytelling. Might come back and change this to 5-stars, depending on how it sticks with me.

Dammit I wish I could give this book a higher rating.
the first 50% or so were SO GOOD. Sadie and Sam were so realistic, fascinating and endearing. I was so invested in their hardships and subsequent successes. The storytelling and writing was super binge-able yet smart and stylish. I loved reading about their childhood, college life and indie game-development.
The next 25% were significantly less interesting, and kind of fell into typical storytelling conventions. The professional world of gaming companies and the setting of LA were much less engaging.
Then the last 25% were a complete flop for me. I didn't like the break in POV for "the NPV" and "Pioneers" chapters. The characterization was less strong, there wasn't enough emotional gravity or resonance even after incredibly tragic events. Many potentially fascinating storylines were barely touched upon (
like Sadie as a mother, Sadie's depressive episodes, Gong Hye's death, and honestly even the effects than Marx's death had on the characters was under-explored IMO
) It ended the book on a very low note for me.
