I don’t really get how the structure of this book was ever going to lend itself to character development.  The book follows the fortunes of people from one family over a period of 75 years or so.   But it jumps from one important date in British history (VE day, World Cup final, Princess Diana etc) to another so that you have no idea how someone who was a kid on the previous chapter ended up the way they are now.  The text seemed to be randomly sprinkled with product names from the past.  I also lost track of who was who’s son or granddaughter or cousin.  And the final chapter reminding us of the impact of Covid on people’s lives wasn’t subtle.  This book simply didn’t do it for me.

Although the social history was interesting I did find the focus on royal events a bit off putting. I skimmed over a lot of the transcriptions of the TV commentary. I was relieved that the characters had different views on the royals and politics more generally. At the beginning I was worried it would be too saccharine.
I found it hard to connect with most of the characters and at times forgot who they were in the story and why I should care about their thoughts on the royal jubilee.
