Parts of this book were giving B grade horror movie vibes where they hear a lot of noises in an abandoned building and think “we should go down in the basement to see if there’s anything down there”.
There were times (and by this I mean a good portion of the middle of the book) where I was like ????? Why the hell would you do that??? I get that this book is about growth. And that part of that growth is recognizing it’s ok to need/want/ask for help but there were moments where it seemed a little over the top.
I saw another reviewer refer to some things as side quests and I couldn’t agree more. Maybe they’ll have significance as we move forward (ok probably they will) but the way they were tied together felt more like plot points that had been written on a white board and had to be hit so it felt like the flow was off.
ALL OF THAT SAID, these were some of the first fantasy books I read and the nostalgia will hit you in the goddamn feels. I will give Paolini this - he knows this world intimately and was able to write a book over a decade later that still felt cohesive to the original story. When we kind of flesh out where this main plot is going it is compelling. He dances a fine line between enough details to keep you interested but not too much that the direction you’re headed is obvious. This book had so much of the magic and depth that was beloved in the originals. I’m definitely biased but I still loved it even with the flaws.
