I LOVE the original series. This one is much different. One, it is a book written by an adult for adults. Almost all the characters are brand new, though the world is the same. We don’t focus on main locations in the original series though. The first 1/3 of the book was AWESOME and I really loved it. The middle third was pretty solid, but there was a huge chunk of the book where I felt like nothing really happened and the mystery felt sort of manufactured. This portion was hard to get through and not exciting for me.
I am VERY glad I reread Inheritance before starting it because we don’t get refreshed on Murtagh’s history. I even wish I had reread the whole series because I remember there being more context that I couldn’t quite remember.
I’m looking forward to the next books and Hope there is a more compelling storyline.

I had a false start on this book as I was told I could read it without having finished the rest of the Inheritance Cycle. That may be true but it lacked so much context and complexity that I got bored. In the intervening months I finished the Inheritance cycle then was able to come back to this and appreciate it…a lot. I even shed tears toward the end.

A long winded return to Alagaesia. I enjoyed the story but recognise that nostalgia played a part in colouring my opinion.

Really a very slow book. Doesn't pick up until well over halfway through. I didn't particularly mind since I like character studies, especially for this character. The last section of the book would be a great horror movie! Though really the whole book is very dark, much darker than the original four books in The Inheritance Cycle.
AND I'm happy this book leaves room for a series focusing on Murtagh; I hope to see it one day.
