The book finishes strong, but the first half meanders a bit as the story comes off as plot-driven. While the ending does bring it back around and leads to well-executed character changes and some poignant moments. It was a worthwhile read for fans of the original series, and it was engaging enough for me to be excited for what could come next.

This book was fine. It was fun to go back to Alagaesia and get new content, and cool to read from the perspective of another rider and dragon besides Eragon and Murtagh, but I don't really feel like this book was needed after a very solid inheritance cycle. It also has the same problem I have with the Avengers Movies, where every movie has the most powerful something ever created and defeating the bad guy is the hardest thing ever, and then the next movie they just come up with something even more powerful to explain away the last one. At the end of Inheritance, it's revealed that Galbatorix knows the true name of the Ancient Language and can use it to truly fuck shit up. Once Murtagh, Eragon, and Arya learn it it's over. Now, in this book, Murtagh's use of the Word doesn't work sometimes because there's a powerful witch who gets her power from a hole in the ground who gives her followers special amulets. Where was she and this hole in the ground for the first four books?
Also, Murtagh spends a lot of his time imprisoned by people.

Someone needs to get Murtagh some better shoes. He spends 1/4 of this book falling down.
It’s been years since I finished the Inheritance series, with Eragon being a particularly influential book for me when I was young. I got older, as most of us do, and read the whole series in one go once Inheritance came out, and I remember being a bit let down. I still enjoy Eragon quite a bit though.
When I saw this on the shelf, my interest was definitely peaked, like my 12 year old self was peering through my eyes, so I figured, why not?
Paolini has definitely improved as a writer, and most of this story moved pretty quickly. He did get bogged down in some circular writing around the 400 page mark, as he did in the Eragon follow ups, but I think he landed the ending pretty well.
I do think think the placement of the sword renaming scene was incredibly odd, taking out a book and doing this while a friend was potentially going to die, kind of undercut the tension of the mounting action for me. But that’s honestly my biggest complaint.
All and all, I enjoyed my return to Alagaësia, and will definitely check out any further adventures if they come.

The first 350 pages seemed like a whole other story, so that’s a bit confusing 3/5. The rest of the book was 4/5. I need at least two more books to answer some questions :)
