This is a book about loss and letting go.
How do you deal with the loss of a limb? What do you do when everyone you love is suddenly taken from you? How do you deal with the fear that you have lost your moral compass and aren't sure you care? When do you finally let go of a loved one who can no longer survive without extraordinary means? What will you sacrifice to ensure the survival of your country?
Salvatore explores all of these issues in between ferocious battles and the tactics behind taking a fortified enemy position. Many times we are shown that it is important to hold on to what is important but not to lose sight of your greater good. Salvatore walks us through these emotions as well as any fantasy writer could.
However, he does stumble in a few ways. For example, I hope to never read the name Ellifain again in my life. Drizzt went from a bit upset over her choice and what it might mean for him to being truly obsessed... seeming to think of her death every few minutes.

**light spoilers follow**
Beyond that, there are very casual revelations (that should be much more than casual) about Drizzt and Cattie-Brie's relationship. Thus should have been a MUCH bigger deal than it was given some of the very slow movement to the romance in earlier books. The other relationship that seemed to make no sense was a female surface elf who seems to become entirely too interested/interested entirely too quickly.
**End spoilers**

All in all, the kind of book we expect from Salvatore with a large promise in the offing for the last book in the trilogy.

There’s a lot that’s good in this book - big epic battles tend to be fun reads. But I admit, I was looking more for a return of the angst-ridden fighter in more depth and a lot more badassery than was delivered.

Worth it for Regis’s remarkable character growth, though.

DID NOT FINISH

I didn't care for the turn of events because I was still grieving for the death of some characters and it felt too soon.
