It's amazing how small things we do affect the world. I can't say that this book will change my life but it will surely add a new insight on how I do in my life. It is like a bunch of pages that has been added and a bunch of stuffs that still remains veiled.
Eddie. the maintenance man, who thinks his life is a complete failure, learns how his life has affected people. He learns it after his death, after every worst thing has happened, through 5 people. Some loved ones and some he barely knows.
He first meets a blue skinned man, a freak in a freak show, Eddie used to go to when he was a child. The story of this man is amusing and disheartening. An outcast, he was feared and he was alone. His part of the story is heart wrenching. The first lesson, Eddie learns that, "There are no random acts. We are all connected. You can no more separate a breeze from wind."
The second person he meets is the captain. Captain's piece of heaven lies in the part which scarred Eddie's life forever. He learns so much about why his life was scarred and who caused it. He learns about sacrifice.
"Sacrifice", the captain says. "You made one. I made one. But you were angry over yours. You kept thinking about what you lost. You didn't get it. Sacrifice is a part of life. It is supposed to be. It is not something to regret. It is something to aspire to. Sometimes when you sacrifice something precious, you are not really losing it. You are just passing it to someone else."
He then meets a woman named Ruby Piers. The same Ruby Piers after whom the amusement Park was named after and built for. Ruby tells him the story about his father. Along the years, Eddie had come to hate his father because of the violence followed by sudden silence. Hate is not the right word though. Sons can somehow never hate their father. Mitch Albom quotes, "Sons will adore their fathers through even their worst behavior. It is how they learn devotion. Before he can devote himself to God or a woman, a boy will devote himself to his father, even foolishly, even beyond explanation."
Ruby tells him how his old man has a beautiful soul and all the things his father did was out of loyalty and love. Eddie lets go of the anger.
"Anger is a poison. It eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And harm we do to ourselves."
"Love, like rain, can nourish from above, drenching couples with a soaking joy. But sometimes, under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish from below, tending to it's roots, keeping itself alive." He meets his wife, the love of his life. This is the part of story where I genuinely felt that true love exists in rarest forms and it lasts forever.
"Eddie found a certain love with Marguerite, a grateful love, a deep but quite love, one he knew that was irreplaceable. Once she'd gone he'd let the days go stale. He put his heart to sleep"
The fifth person, who he meets, reveals why Eddie's life was cliched and full of chaos and why it was not futile. The last one is one of the best stories I have read.... Simple mundane things Eddie had done in his life, the accidents he had prevented, the rides he had kept safe the unnoticed turns had affected every day.
So what did I learn from the story? So many wonderful things. How will it affect me? I have no idea about it. But I am sure it will in some way. I am sure it will make me realize that the five people I meet in heaven will have stories that I will never know in my entire life. And the bottom line is I love stories and I am up for hearing them someday.... I hope they'll be good ones.

It had the potential to be so good. The plot sounded so good but it revoked no emotion in me.
i’d give it 3.75 stars if I could. short book but really wasn’t loving it until the end.
