“‘Thank you.’ For listening. And for tonight. And for making me feel… less alone. A little less burdened, even if only for a little while. ‘I think I really needed to talk to someone, and I want to make sure you know.’”

This book followed Rosie Graham and Lucas Martin--Lina Martin's best friend and cousin, respectively--as they share Lina's studio apartment while she's out of town and go on experimental dates to inspire Rosie as she attempts to write her next romance novel.
I quite literally was hooked from page one. With that adorable meet-cute, I knew instantly that I was going to love both Lucas and Rosie. Lucas is the sweetest, kindest, most protective cinnamon roll I ever did read, and I just adored how he treated Rosie. And Rosie--my literal soul sister--I related to her so much. As a writer myself, it wasn't difficult to put myself in her shoes and want to root for her.
I thought the emotional journeys and subplots of both characters were incredibly well done as well. It provided some really tender moments that squeezed at my heart in the best way. And I loved being able to read from both Rosie's and Lucas's perspectives throughout it all too. I felt like I could truly understand where they both were coming from.
Overall, this book checked all my boxes for romance novels. It had relatable characters with great chemistry, tender and emotional moments, and a great, fun premise and trope. Easily one of my favorite romance reads of the year!

Elena Armas has written another winner! The Spanish Love Deception was one of my favorite romances the year it came out, and this one is no exception. Rosie is a loving and loyal person who at times struggles to see her self-worth in regards to her romantic relationships. And Lucas is someone who after having sustained an injury surfing is struggling to reconcile who he is now after that accident with who he was before it. Also, how adorable was Lucas’s dog, Taco?!?!? I will read every book that Elena writes!

The American Roommate Experiment is the follow-up standalone to The Spanish Love Deception. It follows Rosie Graham (Lina the heroine from the first book’s best friend), and Lina’s cousin, Lucas Martin. After a mishap involving her apartments ceiling, Rosie moves into Lina’s apartment while her own is getting repaired. She doesn’t know that Lina told her cousin Lucas that he could stay in her apartment while she is on her honeymoon. After a hilarious first meeting Rosie and Lucas work out an agreement to share the apartment. As they become friends Rosie tells Lucas of her secret of being a romance writer. She had quit her well paying job as a engineering consultant at her old company, to peruse this writing passion of hers. She has already written and gotten her first novel published, which was an unexpected hit. Now she’s on deadline for book number 2 and is having writers block. Lucas then suggests they go on some experimental dates to re-spark her romantic muse. What follows is a hilarious, heartfelt and at times emotional journey between two people who have baggage but find themselves falling for each other. This is another absolute winner from Elena Armas. The Spanish Love Deception was one of my favorite books the year it came out, and this book is no exception. Rosie is fiercely loving and loyal who is struggling to see her own worth when it comes to romantic relationships. Lucas is still haunted by an accident that happened while he was surfing that left him injured, and questioning who he is anymore. The fact that Rosie had been following Lucas’s Instagram account since Aaron and Lina’s wedding and had developed a crush on him was so cute. You’ll be equal parts cheering and swooning at their scenes together (and Lucas’s adorable dog Taco!) I teared up at quite a few scenes. Of course Lina and Aaron appear in a few scenes (Lina is SO hilarious!), and they were well placed, so as to not take the spotlight off the two main characters. I will be reading every book Elena Armas writes!jess_t's review against another edition

Now if we are being honest Aaron Blackford does still win over Lucas for me. But I loved Lucas character nonetheless, I really liked how I got to see the raw side of a man In a rom com, instead of the typical “boy saves girl” I felt both characters saved eachother. I loved how Lucas spoke, I wish I could hire him as my therapist. Third act break up Lucas was not it for me tho I’m so annoyed at what he did. OH AND THE SMUT *chefs kiss*
I loved the writing in this book and will literally devour any book Elena ever writes, I would of liked to of seen Elena write something other than fake dating, although there were little tropes that were different to the ones in TSD, fake dating were the main tropes in both books, I would like to see Elena write a book with different tropes. Despite this Elena did do an excellent job at making each book each characters book and I can easily distinguish each book from the other they don’t blend in my head. Aaron and Lina did appear in this book but didn’t overtake the book which I liked. One thing I did notice is that there was a lot of “tik tok” associated stuff such as tropes and certain scenes.
I loved this book and would recommend this duology to literally anyone. I can not wait to read future Elena Armas books!!!
