My biggest complaint about this (and the second book in the trilogy) is that Novik spends so much time re-explaining the basic premises of the world she created. Trust your readers to remember the world you’ve created and stop beating us over the head with it (with basically the exact same sentences from your previous books). It would have probably shaved off at least 30 pages.

3.5- This was my least favorite in terms of plot and excitement. However, this book makes it all make sense. The metaphor behind the whole magic system and the enclaves tell a much bigger and more relatable story. For those reasons, I still enjoyed this story. And I love her awesome friends that help her along

I liked this as much as the other two books. I’ve always liked Elle as a character. She was always really prickly with good reason, but she’s different from the previous books, more likely to open her heart to other people and help them.
I wasn’t wild about the actual plot, although the revelations we got were really good.
The magical system is one of my favorite things about the series. And this is a good addition to the dark academia genre.

This series has already become one of my favorites and one I think I will recommend for a while.
I love a series where each book builds on the last but introduces completely new challenges and routines that take into account how the MC has grown.
Each book is basically an urban fantasy cover for a philosophy question set in a magical school.
Book 1 is a deep dive into Nature vs Nurture. It never says that and isn’t heavy handed, but the whole book is El fighting against her natural destructive abilities because her mother is the purest, kindest person on the planet.
Book 2 REALLY gets into privilege- from both angles. It is the Enclave kids having no idea how privileged they are, and then living in a world where that privilege doesn’t help them anymore, El befriending some of these kids and realizing they are as varied as everyone else- some are good and become friends and they were ignorant of their privilege, not malicious because of it, and then making the most of some of the power they took for granted. It is also a lesson for El that friends and groups actually DO help and she can’t do everything.
Book 3 is the Trolly Problem- if the trolly was slowly running over individuals/ groups throughout the book and El had to decide each time who would get hit.
I loved it. She was out of the school and things were even messier than she ever thought they could be. I adored Leisel. I got teary with the parts with Liu and Aadhya, especially at the end. I’m still annoyed El didn’t have a Welsh accent and more annoyed her mother didn’t either.
End was a bit too neat and “happy”, but damn, I enjoyed these.
