Amazing. The best book series I’ve read in recent years. This book tied everything up with a bow. Everything was set up in the earlier books, and I was worried she would have to introduce too many new plot points now that they were outside of the school, but everything made sense. I highly recommend this whole series to everyone

I mean. Fine. It's always going to be hard to follow up the first two set in the school with the third set outside of it, with everything turned on its head. But did everything really need turning on its head thaaaaaaat much. I wasn't sold enough on the thoroughly secondary El/Orion plot in the first two to care about the world ending romance of it here when Orion barely features on the page; the flying to and from different cities around the world was so easy that we really might just as well have had them using translocation spells despite the insistence that that was impossible because reasons; and god, what was that Liesel thing all about? Why was that happening, what purpose did it serve, and why do I now have to read all the people on the internet chastising her for "cheating" when holy fuck is that really what you got from that whole ridiculous plot point. Urgh. The more I write the more annoyed I am about this book. The first one will always be there, thank god.

...and once again, with no regard for tomorrow, I spent the night reading to finish this series, and above all to see what would happen to Orion.
There were moments when I feared the worst and others when I didn't quite understand what was happening, but at least this morning I don't find myself forced to seriously rethink my love for this author.

This felt like a complete and wonderful ending to the series, in that all the loose strings were tied up neatly. This book delves deep into the origins of their magic system and expands on the world-building outside of the academy, finally answering all the probing questions and mysteries that were brought up in the first two books. Some of the discoveries made in this book were genuinely horrifying and surprising. There were a couple of beautiful moments, particularly
the cave scene where all the mages put a hand on each other's shoulders to channel their mana and save each other, despite all their differences.
The pacing in the first bit of the book was a bit dry and slow before picking up in the second half. This was definitely one of the most unique and memorable series I've read.
