This book bravely asks the question, "What if Kingkiller Chronicles...in space?"
Look. I am Kvothe Trash #1. Of course I ate this up.
Ruocchio does some cool stuff with politics and religion, and I'm really invested in the Cielcin and their whole thing. I'm gonna read the whole dang series, absolutely no question.

This author had a home run of a story in the first 120 pages that he just completely threw  away to instead tell a story that was utterly boring. He decided to take so many turns that sadly all ended in dead ends. I will say, he has beautiful prose but his character descriptions were extremely flat. By around page 300, I couldn’t keep the characters straight and felt like I knew nobody. Real rough. I just wish an editor stopped him and said, “go back to the story you were telling on the ship with Demetri, tell that story. I’ve heard the future books get better…do they really get THAT much better though?

With that being said, the last 20 pages lead into Book 2 and it seems like there will be a clearer story. We’ll see if I continue on!

I was a bit reluctant to start this series, mainly cause it intimidated me a lil. But I was pleasantly surprised how little effort it took for me to get stuck into the world. I was switching in between the physical and audiobook; both being a great experience!!
Interested in seeing where the next book leads me. Shoutout Lamarrr

TLDR: This was an incredibly strong start to the series and I am very excited to read on

I've been wanting to read sun eater for a long time, ever since I began red rising earlier last year, and today I finally got around to doing so, and oh boy was I in for a treat.

Like name of the wind, this book acts as the main character (Hadrian Marlowe) recalling his past in his diary, that we are reading through, and this gives a unique feel of how we can expect the story to turn out from the main characters reputation in the future. We follow a single POV protagonist as we traverse Hadrian's early life and struggles before his fame. This book gave strong dune vibes at the beginning, however swiftly changes course before it becomes copy and paste.

This book is incredibly character focused, as character relationships take the forefront of conflict within this book, with the Cielcin also playing a big role towards the end of the book.

However there are some gripes I hold, some characters despite their page time, I feel could have been better developed for what we got. Of course this is the first book of many so this may change later on, however for the pacing of this book I do believe that is a damper. It is also worth noting for red rising fans looking for their next fix, empire of silence, while great, does lack for action comparatively. While this isn't a negative for the book, I do think it is worth mentioning before you dive in if you're expecting the same thing.

This book is certainly slow and takes its time to develop the world we are going to be in for this epic, and while some could definitely see this as tiresome, for me the worldbuilding and journey that Hadrian goes through were fantastic and I am very excited to continue with Howling Dark
