It started out as a 4 star read but it just went on SO long. It really could have used some editing down. It was a blatant mix of Dune and The Name of the Wind but entertaining for all that, until it just. didn't. end. despite never reaching a real climax.
Also, the nonhuman aliens using masculine nouns in their language to imply authority and feminine to imply compliance really PMO. You're telling me that the aliens also have a patriarchal society that diminishes their women. COME ON. Women in general were not a strong point in the huge book, mainly existing as live interests.
Also, poverty and homeless and starvation do not equate freedom. Tell me you're privileged without telling me you're privileged.
The more I think about this book, the lower the rating drops.

DID NOT FINISH: 34%

Could not get into it.  It reminded me too much of Dune, which is superior.

3.5 stars because it’s slow. I find myself teetering between continuing the series or just giving up. No because it’s bad but because I can tell it will be a big investment due to its pace. There’s plenty of world building and subtle promises that things are really going to pick up, but will that be next book? Or the third? Fourth? I mean he could probably write 10 books at this pace. We know it’s going to end up at some grand place due to Hadrians narration from after he “does so much good and so much evil” but will we enjoy the ride and will it fulfill the promises? At least the author is churning the books out at a reasonable pace.

Update:

Not sure what happened but this book was much more enjoyable the second time round. So excited for the rest of the series.
