Persuasion

Jane Austen

4.11 AVERAGE

Nobody can just be happy in a Jane Austen novel, the really have to work at it.

Anne falls in love with a young naval officer Captain Wentworth. Convinced by her mentor Lady Russell that his wealth and social standing are not up to par, she breaks up with him.

Fast forward- Captain Wentworth is now a wealthy and respectable man. Perhaps he is too far out of reach for Anne, whose families lot in life has steadily deteriorated since Captain Wentworth had his heart broken.

Like many books from this time, daughters obey, wealth trumps love and eventually everyone sees the error of their ways and ends up happy.

Probably my least favorite of Austen's novels.

On par with pride and prejudice. Loved the tension every time Captain Wentworth and Anne were in the same room and pining for each other without knowing how the other felt.

Persuasion sets up a phenomenal internal debate for the reader: is persuading morally or ethically right? Furthermore, is being persuaded a sign of a weak-mind?

We see the repercussions of Lady Russell’s persuasion in Anne’s life. I imagine neither could have foreseen the 8 years of misery for Anne when she agreed to not marry Wentworth. But was it right to persuade Anne? And was Anne right to be persuaded? My favorite sentence of the entire book seems to answer the persuasion question: “it is perhaps, one of those cases, which advice is good or bad only as the event decides.” We do see the impact it had on Anne as she states that she would never give such advice.

The book was engaging, fun, and incredibly frustrating to read. I detested all of the Elliots (minus Anne), and I do hate that Walter would benefit from the marriage of Anne and Wentworth. Do be prepared to be frustrated as they take up so much of the book, but it was fun to hate on them. While this is a second chance book-it is so so much more than that. A message to seek advice but to trust yourself more.

It was a hard read, and only a decent story. Not my favorite classic but it wasn’t awful.

2024: This gorgeous, heartbreaking, soaring book. Austen does so well in depicting regret and reconciliation and showing the inner workings of the mind. Half agony and half hope, indeed.

Esse é um dos livros que eu mais amo da vida, a personagem principal Anne , eu pessoalmente me identifico. E a linda história de um amor antigo.
