it was so hard to read, pain and frustration reigned in those pages but what matters the most is the ending, he finally accepted himself and learned to move forward
this book. hit me. SO HARD.
as a queer person who grew up with religious strict parents I can relate so much with this story, obviously Nate's aunt is another level of crazy but I definitely saw myself in Nate's doubts and fear of hell, I've never cried so much when finishing a book, really my chest hurts
and even if I understand the reasons for the ending god damn it, it hurts!

“If you think you need to earn enough points on someone’s rubric for them to accept you, then either you’re wrong to assume they won’t love you for who you are, or they never loved you in the first place.”
This book was incredible. I was kept on my edges throughout the entire story and I loved it. I was truly surprised in a good way. I felt so many emotions from frustration to anger to sadness and then just relief.
This book is about messy people and messy relationships. It is about a boy who is conflicted because of what he was taught by religion and because of his new feelings. It is about friendship, about how important trust is, about how hard it can be to accept ourselves that we can get lost, about being flawed and being a huge asshole, about discovering one self and fearing it, about the hardships and struggles that come with not having a support system and having beliefs that are so tightly influenced by religion, about recognizing love and accepting that sometimes it is not the best choice. There were so many heavy topics but that were all so well addressed! I really enjoyed this.

I feel that some of the plot points of the story are glanced over too quickly and leave the book with a generic taste. There is a nicely written journey of self acceptance and discovery but at the same time I’m not deeply moved by it. Overall, it was a quick read but the reason I kept reading wasn’t because I had to know what happened next, but rather to be done with the book.
fuck i need to stop reading books so painfully relevant to my life at 2am
