This is a pretty awesome read. Extremely fast-paced, leaving little unnecessary detail. Also comes with a nice twist at the end (not entirely shocking, but a good twist is a good twist).

I don’t have much to say about this one other than it’s incredibly addictive (listened to this one on Audible in less than 24 hours), well written, well paced, and a still relevant topic. Also, definitely a funny read, legitimately made me laugh at parts.

Definitely looking forward to reading more from Smedley.

This book was incredible. It was impossible to put down, as the story was so intriguing and had me turning pages dying to know what would happen next the whole way through. I absolutely loved everything about this book from the way it was laid out transitioning from past and present tense, to the subtle character development that was undeniable foreshadowing, the struggles of the characters that felt like my own, and overall just the way the plot unfolded slowly leaving the reader constantly dying to know more. This is definitely the best book I've read in a long time, and one of the only ones I've ever read in only a day and a few sittings simply because of how captivating it was.

I don’t even know what I can say about Deposing Nathan; that it’s impossible deep? That it makes my heart hurt and my eye burn? That it was dark and challenging, and I loved every second of it?

‘Nate never imaged that he would be attacked by his best friend, Cam.’

The book starts at the end, at a deposition in which Nathan is given this testimony about his relationship with Cam and how he ended up in the hospital, beaten and stabbed. The bravery of Nate telling strangers, his parents, and Cam’s parents every single detail of their time together, from when they met, to New Year’s Eve, to the Beach Party up to the night where everything ended. Nate and Cam are flawed people; their world is hard, brutal, and dark. They are not safe, but they do have each other, as bad as they are for each other.

Deposing Nathan covers a wide range of issues; abuse, sexuality, homophobia, biphobia, religion, first love, heartbreak. It holds nothing back; every dark thought is expressed; every soft moment is shown. Fear is a cloud over almost every word. Safely put, this book is not for the faint-hearted, but it is brilliant. I loved how it was written, flicking between past and present, living inside Nate’s head. I’m impressed by how deeply this book made me feel, and I honestly don’t understand how I waited so long to read it.

And for a second, just a second, I swear I see us become the whole universe.

This book blew me awayyyy. It's definitely one of those reads where it's better to go into knowing the least about it. The characters and story are delicately crafted while also tackling very important subjects. It's eyeopening and raw and doesn't hold anything back. A quick and fast read to recommend to anyone who's looking for a book to pick up.

« “It’s not cute when people try to ‘fix’ each other. It’s cringey and dysfunctional. We both need to already have our shit worked out before we bring anyone else into it.” »

An important read with very well written characters. Gut-wrenching.

I don’t think I’ve read a contemporary quite like this. This was such an important story to tell and I’m deeply impressed by the way the novel handled the relationship between the two main characters towards the very end.

The plot was refreshingly mature and dignified, especially for a genre oversaturated with authors who consistently romanticize toxic/abusive relationships. While the reading experience was by no means light – there were some scenes that viscerally made me sick – I think it’s the kind of story that everyone needs to read.
