So so beautiful, it's hard to describe :") I feel so poetic and romantic after reading this haha
Some of my favorites:
I will love you with too many commas, but never any asterisks.
No matter your wreckage.
There will be someone to find you beautiful,
despite the cruddy metal. Your ruin is not to be hidden
behind paint and canvas. Let them see the cracks.
Someone will come to sing into these empty spaces.
on a scale from one to over-trusting, I am pretty damn naive.
Leaving is an easy art to learn. But the
advanced steps—the pirouettes and arabesques
are difficult to master.

Loved this collection a lot. Sarah Kay’s writing is inviting and feels like home. I found myself dog-earing so many of the pages because of how much I enjoyed some of these poems. The collection as a whole presents us poems about identity, love, family, and finding the silver linings amidst the dark parts of life. I loved the glimpses into her childhood and it’s contrast to her adulthood. I will definitely be checking out more of her work because this collection was solid!

Not sure how I feel about it.
It was beautiful, but I didn't connect with it as much as I hoped I would. Some of the poems I really liked, others...not so much. It took me a long time to read all of them. Very beautifully written, just not for me I guess.

This is one of the only poetry books I’ve ever read that felt completely unedited. These poems were so long, not because it needed to be, but because the poet attempted to put so many things in what couldve been consise and amazing. Less is MORE. Putting your brothers whole life story in one poem is never going to turn out good.

Still now, I send letters into space,
hoping that some mailman somewhere
will track you down and recognize you
from the descriptions in my poems;
he will place the stack of them in your hands
and tell you, There is a girl who still writes you.
She doesn’t know how not to.
I love Sarah Kay's spoken word. Some of these poems speak stronger to me than many self help books or wisdom gurus. I have come away from this book with a few new life lessons, some beautiful lines of poetry that will stick and a feeling of contentment. There were some poems that I just laughed at the ridiculous metaphors, but I'm picky with my poetry so no poet will escape that criticism from me.
As I've had this book on my physical bookshelf for about four years. I am glad I can finally say it is finished!

i never know how to review poetry books, so i guess i'll just share some excerpts of my favorite poem from the book ♡♡:
//on the discomfort of being in the same room as the boy you like//
... everything is looking at you looking at him. everyone can tell. he can tell. so you spend most of your time not looking at him. the wallpaper, the floor, there are cracks in the ceiling... people are talking so you look at their faces. this is a good trick. they will think you are listening to them and not thinking about him. now he is talking. so you look away. the cracks in the ceiling are in the shape of a whale or maybe an elephant with a fat trunk... he is asking a question now and no one has answered it yet. so you lower your eyes from the plaster and say, the twenty-first, i think, and he smiles and says, oh, cool, and you smile back, and you cannot stop your smiling, oh, you cannot stop your smile.
apart from creating written poetry, the author also frequently performs spoken word poetry, which i absolutely freaking love. here's one of my favorites - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhrpTUI2tWg, where she performs astronaut, with a little made-up tune to a nursery rhyme at the beginning.

“When I am inside writing,
all I can think about is how I should be outside living.
When I am outside living,
all I can do is notice all there is to write about.”
I have been a big fan of Sarah Kay’s spoken word poetry ever since I watched the video for her poem with Phil Kaye called When Love Arrives. Since then I have watched every video featuring her poems as well as her TED Talk, which is excellent by the way. So recently, as I’ve started to explore poetry books, No Matter the Wreckage was a must read. I found it to be a great collection of poems, many of which I ended up re-reading many times, and memorizing as a result. There is a variety of subjects and emotions that are explored, such as love, family, and insecurities. Certain passages just reach out, perfectly expressing thoughts and feelings that are not always easily put into words. My personal favourites are: The Type, The Paradox, Here and Now, The Shirt, and Evaporate. This is a strong collection that I would recommend even if poetry is not typically your thing, as I feel there is something here for anyone to connect to. And do check out the videos of Sarah Kay. As good as her poetry is in print, it is that much more strong and powerful when she is reciting it.
