Als een boek me zelfs na de zoveelste keer lezen zo weet te boeien, dan is 5 sterren het enige cijfer dat je kunt geven.
Ik blijf de schrijfstijl lekker vinden. Ik heb nooit last gehad van het trage dat sommigen ervaren. ik hou wel van de uitgebreide beschrijvingen.
De karakters zijn fenomenaal met als leukste natuurlijk Simon.
Simon stuntelt eigenlijk van de ene ramp in de andere en overleeft zeker in het begin voornamelijk door puur geluk. Later in de serie groeit hij daar wel in. Op zich wel logisch aangezien ik maar weinig jonge pubers ken die doordachte dingen doen.
Miriamele is wat onzeker, maar ook erg leuk dat ze niet een afwachtend poppetje is, maar zelf beslissingen neemt en daar de consequenties van draagt. En dat ze van zich afbijt vind ik persoonlijk ook een groot pluspunt.
Morgenes is je standaard wijze oude verstrooide man met geheimen. Ik wilde maar dat ik zo iemand kende.
Rachel is sympathieke oude brommerige vrouw met een grote mond en een klein hartje. (Ik heb een groot zwak voor Rachel de Draak.)
Binabik had ik meteen een zwak voor. Ik vind hem eerlijk, trouw en oprecht. Bovendien heeft hij gevoel voor humor. Dat hij niet meteen het achterste van zijn tong liet zien, vind ik alleen maar logisch. Het waren nogal rare omstandigheden en ik kan me zo voorstellen dat hij ook niet meteen vertrouwen stelt in een opgeschoten jongen, die lichtelijk hysterisch aan het doen is.
Jiriki is geheimzinnig en raadselachtig. Hij fascineert mij mateloos. (Ja, ook bij de zoveelste keer lezen).
Haestan's vriendelijkheid en levensinstelling trekken mij erg aan.
Jozua, ik weet niet wat ik van hem moet denken, ook niet na alle keren dat ik de hele serie gelezen heb. Hij heeft mijn sympathie, maar af en toe kan ik hem wel schoppen. Vorzheva kan best een vent vinden met wat meer pit en wat minder doemgedachten.
Pryrates is een engerd en totaal niet symphatiek. Echt een slang. ( Sorry slangen)
Naast de karakters en de manier van schrijven, vind ik de plot ook geweldig. Diepgaand, met meerdere lagen. Vol verborgen subplots en onverwachte wendingen die totaal logisch blijven in het verhaal. Geweldig.
Voeg daar nog een wereld vol geschiedenis, vreemde volkeren en verschillende habitats aan toe en je hebt een meesterwerk.

I recently rekindled my love for fantasy books and I was so excited to read this series! However, for the first half of the book you basically only keep to two or three characters and it became really hard to stick with it with an apparent lack of direction or story.
Maybe I'm too impatient, maybe I should give the next book in the series a go?

Summary: This is a solid fantasy book with all the usual suspects doing all the usual things. I really liked the central character Simon and found some of the sequences gripping.

The central character of Simon: I think the author has written this character smartly. Not just an adult in a small body who's killing time till he becomes the next ultimate warrior/arch mage. In particular I enjoyed times when as a child he is challenged to review the ethics of some of the decisions he's made. All I can say is the character sounded 'true' to me, which helped a lot in wanting to keep reading about his life.
Auxiliary characters: Not the main plot drives but the court bard and jester I both enjoyed a lot. They were more than just plot devices used to deliver key bits of information. They added color and context to some of the crucial parts of the story and enhanced my enjoyment and consideration of what was going on.
Things I thought could have been improved.
Too many POVs/characters: Especially at the start of the book their are a lot of characters introduced by name without a lot of time being spent on developing the identity of the character or what function they performed in the story. A bit like getting introduced to a whole bunch of people at a party I was a bit a loss to remember everybody's names. I think if this had been a bit more restricted (just 2 or three, or even sticking to a first person narrative) I would have been able to follow along more easily.

this is a big book and I felt it was a bit cheeky to end the first book with almost no proper resolution. I'm going to read the second book now. A large part of that is because I don't feel satisfied having read the first. I think it's nice (at least for a first book in the series), if you can read it as a bit of a stand alone. To leave almost all the characters in jeopardy is pretty rough having slogged through 700 pages to get there.

Following Simon from his humble beginning as a kitchen boy through the journeys he is fated to take, Tad Williams definitely gives the world of Osten Ard the feeling an unstoppable destiny approaching.
My initial reaction to this book comes mostly from the writing style. The flowery and detailed descriptions of everything and anything took some getting used to, but now provide a depth of color to the world and characters that I thoroughly enjoy.
What I liked most about this book is something that I have been craving from recent reads that I haven’t quite found. The fated antagonist from humble beginnings that grows and adapts and becomes the powerful savior (I hope, this is only book one after all). Simon is what I have been looking for!

I picked this up because I've seen it frequently recommended for people who are fans of Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings series which is my favourite fantasy series. I see lots of potential with this series and understand why it's recommended for fans of Hobb; Tad Williams has a similar tone and writing style, it's also introspective in nature. Unfortunately, it's too slow paced for me and even at the 70% mark, I'm still not invested. Due to its length and the fact that I went into it knowing it was a slow burner, I gave it a solid chance but it feels like too much of a slog to continue so I'm done.

An incredibly long read that took me absolutely ages to get into, but once it hooked me I was gone.
Simon is one of the most frustrating protagonists, which I think indicates how well he’s written, he continually acts like a surly idiot teenager which just helped remind me that that is exactly what he is.
I was planning on taking a break before diving into the second MAMMOTH book, but I shan’t and I’m going to start it now :)
